Gabriel Finder is usually supposed to teach this class with another professor but that professor wasn't available this semester so Volker Kaiser took his place. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class was a 75 minute suicide mission biweekly. I could not sit through this class and not want to die.
Finder cares about his students and is always talking about how we are welcome to attend his office hours to further discuss class material, any ideas for the papers that we have, etc. I have no complaints about him. Kaiser, on the other hand, is a professor from the depths of hell. Whenever a student throws out an idea about a reading that was assigned, he would disagree with said idea and go on a tangent for ages. Many of the writings that were assigned to be read did not have a right/wrong and were simply used for discussion - it is unfair for Kaiser to say that our ideas are incorrect.
In terms of the workload, it's pretty rough. There are a multitude of novels that you need to buy, and you need to put aside a lot of time to read the assigned writings, which are usually really dense. In class, rather than going over the material, Kaiser and Finder usually just end up debating about their opposing views (and they have A LOT of opposing views). Do not take this class. Out of 29 classes, I ended up attending just 8 and I still will probably manage at least a B in the class (B- on the first paper, A on the research paper). The good thing about this class is that there are only three papers you need to write: two 5 page papers worth 30% each, and a 10 page research paper that's worth 40%. But yeah. This class is hell.
