This course was really engaging because Prof. Herman was so enthusiastic about it. There were no exams or tests. We read a book and had quizzes on it. We also read and watched a lot of other things that were from a very wide range of topics. We studied the geology, ecology, hydrology, and the cultural and economical aspects of the journey that Lewis and Clark's expedition took. We learned through the eyes of the individuals that were apart of the expedition. This class also had a few writing assignments but nothing that was too stranious. Overall, a very interesting and not too stressful class. #tCFspring2021
So this class is very minimal work and there are no exams. Also, paying attention in class is not at all necessary, and Professor Herman is very kind and enthusiastic. However, I would be very careful of taking this class if you are looking for an easy A. I was absolutely shocked with how stringent Herman was in her grading -- I have never had a professor tear into my writing so heavily, and I especially did not anticipate that coming from an environmental science, "filler", class. In summary, this class is easy, but do not take it if you are looking for a GPA boost. The grading will seem unfair and extremely frustrating on most occasions, so if that is your intention than I highly suggest you look elsewhere.
I took this course mainly because of the great experiences I have had with Herman. This class is offered about once every four years, and they rotate which faculty member teaches what, so if you find yourself in a situation where Watersheds is being taught by Herman, I 100% absolutely all the way totally recommend you take it! I am an envi sci major and had an AWESOME time learning about Lewis and Clark's journey. She took an interdisciplinary approach, so while we did cover a lot of the geology and hydrology of the route, there was also a lot of focus on the Natives they encountered and what the route looks like today. The workload for this class was minimal; expect about an hour of writing every week or so, and about an hour of reading every other week. The projects need your attention and you ought to give at least 3+ for them, but there's only 3 or 4 that really require that. Not a ton of work but you'll learn a lot every single class. Excellent course and counts towards the envi sci major!
Janet Herman is kind, compassionate, and interested in her subject matter. I had no environmental science background going in but still found the class easy and enjoyable. There was not very much work involved, either. I don't know how long this class will be offered, but Herman's worth getting to know.
