Literally my favorite class I've ever taken at UVA. Professor Nelson is engaging, passionate, and willing to help. This class has shaped how I see UVA, the south, and my place as a white student at UVA. I've spoken to my other classmates who agree wholeheartedly that Prof Nelson could not be a better professor. It is not a difficult class if you just show up to lecture, I found the midterm and finals pretty easy. You do need to do the readings, but I skimmed them and got As on both the midterm and the final. The class is just about memorization. There are easy opportunities for extra credit as well. I absolutely, 100% recommend this class to anyone looking to fulfill a requirement or just curious about the south! The class is cross-listed as American studies, art history and architecture history, so there is stuff for literally anyone in this class. Such an absolutely amazing class!
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY PROFESSOR NELSON
he seems nice and easy going but he makes his exams RIDICULOUSLY HARD. SERIOUSLY.
Also, the TA you get in this class will largely determine your grade. Stay away from James Razumoff.
As regards to the course, there are an insane amount of readings, all of them very long, and Nelson expects you to have read every last inch of it. You also cannot miss a single lecture or miss a single thing that he said during lecture. I had to dedicate my life to this class after failing the midterm just to graduate.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IT IS NOT WORTH IT
