I took this course as "Classical Islamic Texts" in the Fall of 2016. Please note that the class does not center on a study of religious texts, per se, but rather a broad range of classical literature written by Muslim writers. The readings are very challenging, even for advanced students due to the archaic nature of some of the language used by several of the writers. However, with great challenge comes great reward - if one can successfully complete the readings and writing assignments, they will grow considerably. The material covers excerpt from a very broad range of prominent Arab authors from the medieval period and includes individually tailored research projects for the mid-term and final projects. The work load is manageable, but expectations are fairly high for quality writing and speech. If you are considering taking this class, it would be advisable to meet with Dr. Hermes ahead of time to make sure you can handle the intensity of the class, which is conducted entirely in MSA (Not Dialect!). Also, be prepared to speak regularly either through presentations to the class or through routine class participation. Having taken Arabic courses with a number of the professors at UVA and at several other institutions, I would rank Dr. Hermes among the very best in terms of his teaching ability and his approachability. Furthermore, he is exceptionally friendly and takes time to make gentle corrections for his students when and where necessary. This class was easily the most difficult and at the same time most rewarding and enjoyable class I took this semester. If you are a motivated and advanced student of Arabic (as in, ARAB 4010/4020 is not/was not difficult for you) and are prepared to take on the most challenging coursework offered by UVA's MESALC Dept, I HIGHLY recommend this class.
