Some of the readings are pretty hefty and they can be tedious if you don't have any interest at all but the instructor is so passionate and his lectures are really interesting. In class you just listen to lecture and take notes (no technology only handwritten) but it helps with memory retention. Although he does make you buy the textbook, the exams are relatively easy and the papers are about any topic you want and getting an A isn't hard at all. #tCFF23
Professor Heldt makes class very enjoyable and interesting to take. While some of the readings were pretty long and sometimes weren't that interesting to read, he still did a great job of making the topic in class interesting to listen to, and he definitely made me think about how I read the literature in ways I hadn't before. There was a short writing every class which seemed to just be a way to make sure you kept up with the readings, and then there were two papers, one short, and then one a bit longer at about 7 pages, which isn't too bad. It's an interesting class as long as you keep up with the readings and make sure to study the terms.
Professor Heldt is the best guy. Hilarious, interesting and really knowledgeable and he respects your opinion/input. He also always answers questions. Hard to reach outside of class by email however, but his office hours are usually regular. JPTR 3010 also fulfills both Non-Western and Second Writing. You also don't need to know any Japanese at all.
