I think calc 2 is a class that ranges in calculus skills. The amount of work and studying you have to do depends on your comfort on the topics. But Professor Abramenko teaches the lecture as if people did not know the subject coming in which is good. The class was structured where there was about half an hour of lecture and 10-15 minutes of doing the daily assignments. Professor Abramenko and the TAs will come around and help students. But depending on class size, she may not get to you or have time to answer a lot of questions. You do have to have a good pre-calculus knowledge and calc I knowledge (specifically u substitution) for the integration. If you do not, there's always p2l, office hours, and TA hours. The one thing I think some people had issues with her as a professor was sometimes, she makes mistakes. It will take her seconds to fix the mistake. I had no issues with that, but I recognize why it could be distracting for others.
The class itself isn't that hard. I think the assignments are doable. The main thing is the midterms and finals. The main tip is that the midterms are almost exactly like the daily assignments. Practice the assignments over and over again till you can tackle all the scenarios. The final exam was hard. I suggest going over assignments a week in advance. If you want challenges, use the webassign problems as challenge problems. One of the main things about APMA 1110 is that there is a lot to remember ranging from integrations, work, and to series. Not everything will appear equally on the final.
I do have to say that if you find calculus enjoyable, then I think the last minutes of the final lecture is enjoyable because it summarizes the various topics of calc II in such simplistic fashion known as Euler's formula and Euler's identity.
Although this course can be a little difficult at times, professor Abramenko makes it very easy to find help. She holds frequent office hours and if there is a problem that she can't help you with immediately, she goes out of her way to make sure that you understand it the next time that she sees you. All in all, the material isn't awful, but with enough studying, the material becomes very understandable and even enjoyable.
I love Abramenko. I also love math. However, this course was hard and the exams are graded harshly (I once lost 8% for forgetting a negative sign in my final answer).
Tips for success:
- go to lecture
- practice problems
- study the worksheets and in-class problems, not the webassigns for the exams
- go to office hours and P2L
- talk to Abramenko if you are struggling and may need accommodations. She will help you!
Overall, a difficult class but a great professor. Whoever decides the grading for the exams, however….
Professor Abramenko is an excellent and caring teacher. Her class is challenging, but she is more than willing to help answer questions. I highly recommend going to office hours because she will help you work through whatever problems you are struggling with. Her accent is really not a problem and had no affect on my ability to learn in the class. I think that she is definitely the best Calc II teacher and highly recommend that you take her.
Most people taking this course are SEAS students who have no other choice, so assuming you have to take this class, Professor Abramenko is a great professor. She is funny in an older-person way sometimes and she really wants you to succeed. You have worksheets and webassign due each week, ~5 quizzes, ~3 tests, and a final at the end of the semester. Webassign - 10%, Worksheets - 10% (also based on how well your group members do), Quizzes - 5%, Tests - 45%, Final - 30%. I personal could not get an A so I will be taking CR instead, but an A is definitely doable. If you keep up with all the webassign and worksheets, are trying to learn material before the class, and aren't doing things the night before, an A shouldn't be too hard. It's just math, if you work hard and learn it well, you will do well. Of course I did not do that so my advice might not be the greatest :)
She is by far one of my favorite professors. I love how she teaches the course. She has a slight German accent but it doesn't hinder her teaching at all and she sometimes makes mistakes while teaching but she catches them. The worksheets don't count towards your grade as long as the class consistently turns it in and puts effort. If you have any trouble at all she is easy to approach at her office hours, which I attended frequently. Overall she is really sweet and you can't go wrong having her as a teacher. As far as the class goes as long as you understand all the worksheets the exam shouldn't be too bad. The web assigns are a lot harder than the exams.
Great proffesor and not as bad as people make it out to be.
If you are having any trouble, attend office hours and she will help you understand concepts.
My top tips to succeed in this class: Do the HW and understand it. Redo problems you couldn't do by yourself when studying /revising for exams. Group worksheets make up a significant portion of what is tested and quizzed. Pay attention when doing them and redo them before tests for studying. Quizzes are usually certain questions from group worksheets copied over. Get a 100% in that 10% category in order to give yourself some wiggle room. Do well on the 3 midterms. Try getting low As or high Bs on all of them because the final is pretty tough. To give you a certain idea of averages the first test average was about a B. It's extremely easy concepts, go for the high A or100 on this one because it is very possible. Second exam is usually the hardest because it's all applications, not your standard Calc class material like pressure and work. This test average was a C. It is tough, but try and go for a B or higher. Third test is confusing at first, but if you do all the group sheets you are guaranteed a high A. The average for this test is usually a high B .
I would not recommend Professor Abramenko. She has a thick German accent which can be hard to understand at times, and she makes many mistakes while teaching and going over examples. However, she is a very sweet lady and is always more than willing to help and is approachable and friendly in office hours. She encourages participation and doesn't make you feel stupid. There is a very generous curve at the end of the course which is definitely needed considering the exam averages. The final exam was ridiculously challenging. Overall, I think there are better professors for this course.
Enjoyed the content, but would definitely recommend taking the course with another professor. Abramenko frequently made mistakes in her math, and that was pretty distracting. The test averages were usually about in the high 70s, but it seems as though there was a somewhat sizable curve at the end of the semester. Quizzes were very easy and a grade booster.
