Professor Herman is the nicest person there is. Her along with Profs. Mills, Blum, Rice, and Riscazzi make this course so worthwhile. I am someone who is not an EVSC major but is interested in learning more about the environment and this course helped me do just that. Can’t say enough good things about her and the course. Loved it.

You're actually able to repeat this class for credit, so this is the second time I have taken it under Prof. Herman. If you've had her for any other class, you already know how enthusiastic and knowledgeable she is, but if not, let me just tell you: She is everything you could want out of a professor. She makes classes fun, the workload is light (it is 1 credit after all), she's usually able to get a field trip planned, and you can really grow in your understanding of a specific facet of a particular environmental concern. The first time I took this class, the focus was on the Flint water crisis, and this semester we have been focusing on pharmaceuticals in our waterways as contaminants of emerging concern. The readings are super interesting, and I cannot say how appreciative I am that this class fosters a low-pressure atmosphere to discuss your thoughts and understanding of the material. Can't recommend this class enough, for both science and non-science majors, as policy is a topic as frequently as more science-y things are!

Basically, this class is just a one credit seminar. You read an article before each class and then spend the class discussing the article and relevant infomaion and topics. It's really interesting, as you get a range of perspecives on geoolgy and hydrology problems, and the class is also really easy. Professor Herman is also great, very approachable, knowledgable, and efficient at teaching and leading discussions.
