The majority of the work for this course is reading and writing. You will be required to write a few essays, read before every class, and participate. CHTR 3010 is certainly not difficult if you take some time to look over the readings. Your grade will be determined by how much time you choose to devote to writing essays. Professor Kinney is knowledgeable about the subject - an expert, in my opinion - and can answer any questions if you are interested in Chinese Literature. This is not a class to stress over or fear, but be sure to give the essays your best effort and do not be afraid to make unpopular arguments (assuming you can defend them).
The class is one of my favorite classes here at UVA. The course load is not intense; as long as you do the readings, you should be fine. The midterms are very easy if you do your readings and take notes in classes. I got an A for the class overall and there are not too much writings for the class. The prof is super nice and not very harsh on grading at all, especially for writing. You don't need to have any knowledges in Chinese or Chinese literature to get an A in the class. Highly recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn about Chinese literature
I am a STEM major and took this class as a discipline. I absolutely loved it!
We would read a variety of different types of written media, (all of it having been translated to English), all the while learning about traditional Chinese culture, language, and traditions. From poetry to short stories and a novel, this class covered a little bit of everything.
Professor Kinney is also an absolute gem of a person. She is funny, kind, understanding, and asked thought provoking questions in lecture. If I had taken this class earlier, it might have convinced me to try and pursue a minor in Chinese. I would highly recommend this course for anyone who is looking to explore a new topic.
We would have very straightforward (to be honest, easy,) reading quizzes and the final exam consisted of a written exam and matching section that was very similar to the quizzes. If you work hard, you'll get a good score. The Professor is exceptionally understanding and went above and beyond to make her classroom a welcoming and fun place.
