Professor Ma is impeccable at her job. She ensures that students understand why they are taking each step to solve a problem in clear and easy to understand ways. I learned things from her in a span of 15 minutes that I could never completely understand in high school.
The way this course was graded could be really stressful at times, but they revised that about halfway through, which was a major help (so don't worry). Make sure you understand the syllabus in the beginning of the course and ask questions about it if you have any.
Go to class, go to office hours, don't be afraid to reach out for help. I promise, the professor wants to help you to the greatest of her ability. #tCFF23
Professor Ma is one of the nicest and most understanding professors I have had. She cares about all her students and wants them to succeed. I found her lectures to be very helpful and she was able to explain the concepts in a straightforward manner, much better than my high school calculus teacher was able to. Office hours are a big help and she is willing to walk you through any problem that you may be having difficulty with. The course is structured in order for you to succeed as long as you keep up with the material. The mastery based learning was helpful to keep reviewing each week and ensure a better understanding of the content without the stress of big midterms. Professor Ma listens to all students feedback and changed the grading scale of the weekly checkpoints to be more forgiving and allow more students to succeed. Overall this has been a great class and I highly recommend taking it with Professor Ma. #tCFF23
The class is more a measure of how hard you're willing to work. The worksheets are graded based on completion but you must make a decent effort to receive credit. You have office hours and learning target carnivals to master learning targets. If you're willing to put the work in and go to office hours and peer learning sessions then there's no reason you can't succeed in the class. Hui Ma is a nice professor and will go over problems with you during office hours to ensure you know what you're doing and help point out mistakes you made. The mastery-based grading system is frustrating at first but as I said before if you're willing to put in the time it's a nice grading system that allows you to focus on areas you may be weak in. The Webassigns are harder than anything you'll see on a checkpoint, worksheet, or exam. Overall APMA 1090 with Hui Ma is a good class and I'd recommend it to anyone who asks.
This class was definitely not an easy A, and I truly felt because it was the way the class was taught. The professor is such a nice and kind lady however, she just wasn't the best teacher for me and it made the class way more difficult. For starters it was very difficult to understand her at times and when lecturing she spoke very quietly and it had hard to comprehend what she was saying (easy to get distracted). Additionally, I was not a fan of the structure of the class she barley did any example problems in class and always ran out of time during. lectures and never finished them. I truly feel math can be made easy with a good teach so I recommend you take this class with someone else.
As someone who took Calculus BC in high school, I was taught at most 10% of what you will cover in this course. I got a B in this class, after failing the first test because I came in not knowing how to study. After, failing I was able to bring my grade up and ended up with a 93% on the last test and an 85% on the final. To study for the tests, I would highly recommend going over each webassigns and utilizing the practice another feature. These really helped me and were a big part of the reason I did well on the last three tests.
Professor Ma is the best, she gives out printed notes that I do not think the other professors do and she really explains the materials to ensure that you understand it. If you take APMA 1090 I really recommend taking it with her. This course is set up as each of the three midterms is worth 15% of your grade, the final is worth 25% of your grade, and homework and participation are worth 15% of your grade each. There is also extra credit opportunity at the beginning of the semester, you need to do this, it will come in handy later. If you study, do the homework and classwork to the best of your ability, and not fail your first test like me then you should do well in this course.
Homework is quite a bit but manageable, Professor Hui Ma is very nice teacher. Her lectures are very concise and she taught the concepts very well (didn't feel like I needed to teach myself content outside of class) and would definitely take another one of her classes again. Make sure to study and do well on the exams as they make up most of your grade.
Professor Hui Ma was a great teacher. We were sometimes given time to work on the homework during class and given several group assignments to be completed in class that were a great review and helpful due to the collaboration. As long as you stay on top of the worksheets and Webassign for this course it won't be a struggle and the professor gives you many resources to succeed such as practice problems, a grade boost for attending a certain amount of P2L sessions, office hours, etc. Would recommend taking a course with Professor Hui Ma and would take one again if I have the option. #tCFfall2021
