I'm not an art history person so I found this class a bit difficult to study for. I took a greek art/architecture class with Bell and got an A but for some reason I could not do the same for this class. I got a better grade in my biochemistry class than I did for this class but then again I AM a biology person. There's a quiz, midterm, and final. Professor Goedde's a really nice guy and really enjoys what he does. Even though I didn't do as well as I wanted to, I still really enjoyed what I learned.
Class was not what I thought it would be. There was way too much information. When I took this course both Flemish and Dutch art were surveyed so much it was overwhelming. I used to major in Art History and the I realized this department was not for me. I lost interest in the course quickly and am surprised by the responses below.
Goedde is a knowledgeable and approachable guy, but the volume of content is overwhelming. Although he does not emphasize memorization, it is necessary to keep everything straight. To be fair, I never did any reading, but I do not think it would have helped me anyway. I took a prior class with Goedde where I did every reading, and I got the same A- grade in both courses. I had to do a LOT of studying to get an A-, but the time I spent on this course outside of class was concentrated only for the week or two leading up to the quiz, midterm, and final.
