As this course has been redesigned, it served to teach a decent number of concepts and platforms related to data engineering but it is not a hard class (especially if one starts the homeworks early) as Gerber repeats the core material in lecture quite frequently, and structures in class activities and assignments to give students extra practice with the material in a hands-on way. The course borrows a lot from CS 2110, especially in the early portion. A few of the homeworks are challenging, but Gerber provides enough sample code to help and runs office hours well.
Attend class - there's really no other way to know what material is being covered, and short quizzes at the start of each meeting aren't too difficult if one reviews notes from the previous class or an assigned reading for 10 minutes beforehand.
Policy of no student to student assistance on homework is strict, but a benefit to the students and all homework can be easily completed without it.
This course has some really interesting material. The second half of the course is far more difficult than the first half but still overall pretty easy. The average on the midterm was above 90 lol. Gerber is a solid teacher....but the first half of this class is almost a repeat of CS 2110 and SYS 2001. HW's range from taking 15 min to a few hours.
I really enjoyed this class. The topics that we covered were very interesting and extremely useful. The first four homeworks were very easy, but some of the later ones were a little more time consuming. The homeworks and exams were graded very fairly, and the homeworks really solidified the stuff we were learning in class. Great class, would recommend
Gerber very clearly knows the material taught in this class. The first couple of months are fun as he explains a topic, then gives you a few minutes to work through what he just did on your personal computer. While he may state that CS 2110 is a prerequisite for the course, I had no troubles keeping up with this class while taking 2110 concurrently. A lot of the material is super interesting and definitely helped me in internship interviews. Definitely start early on the homeworks, but besides that a pretty low-stress class. The average for the midterm was an A-.
Great class. Honestly didn't pay attention in class and was fine. Only thing is the TA's shaft you randomly at times on the HW, and they are hard to come by and when you talk to Gerber, he wants nothing to do with it and only wants you to go to the TA's. However, the beauty of this course is that even with these random events, you will never be worried because everything is really simple and not at all hard to do well on. ok.
