Professor Kingston does a good job of simplifying social problems that may otherwise be considered very complex. The readings generally come from prominent sociologists and are fairly eye-opening. If you do the readings, highlight important parts, take notes in class, and participate in discussions you will have a big chance of getting an A. Also, if you get below an 80% on any of the exams he will allow you to make corrections up to an 80%. I recommend this course to anyone interested in voting at some point in their life, seeing as it helps develop educated opinions on social problems.
I would advise taking this course if you already have some interest in social problems. If you like to keep up with recent trends in society, especially with regard to drugs, violent crime, racism, sexism, and poverty, then you can basically continue what you've probably already been doing; reading articles on those topics. There isn't much work, aside from the readings. Discussions are decent, but you'll probably find that there's so much of a consensus on many issues that they aren't terribly worthwhile. Overall, a good class. I don't really mention Kingston because he didn't really affect my experience in the course any.
Great class! We covered so many practical problems. Should do fine in the class as long as you read and attend lecture. There are about 4 assignments where you had to write, but generally not much. Discussion is important to attend. For review for the midterm and final DO THE STUDY GUIDES!!! If you know everything on the study guide, you will do well on the test. I would recommend going to your TA's or professor Kingston's office hours for review after you have completed the study guide. Mark questions you have attempted to answer but are unsure of. Most of the answers will come from your notes and lecture. Also, group studies for the tests help too. If you do the study guides, then you should be able to get an A in the class.
Professor Kingston was not that good of a professor. My TA was a very hard grader as well. I ended the class with a B- mainly because I did not attend lecture, got mid to low B's on the 2 papers, did not do well on the midterm, and did not do as well on the final as I should have. Your grade in this class depends heavily on the TA that you get unfortunately. As long as you read, attend lecture regularly, and attend discussion sections and consult your TA about your papers you should be able to pull out at least a B+.
