This class rocks! Prof. Connolly is a wonderful teacher and explains the material so well. You can tell that Dostoevsky is one of his favorite authors. Take this class if you have the chance. One warning: you will be reading a lot of stuff, but if you do the reading this class is actually entertaining.
This class was amazing! Professor Connolly clearly LOVES Dostoevsky, in a way that is infectious. If you keep up with the reading, you will get a lot out of the class. Be aware that it is a lot of reading, and you should try to keep up so you can participate in discussion. A great look into CPLT classes. Also, the papers are not bad if you can think of an interesting topic.
Connolly is one of the best professors I have had at UVA so far. He is so genuinely interested and engrossed in Dostoevsky's works that it makes you appreciate Dostoevsky so much more. However, I suppose a caveat about the class is the amount of reading. Dostoevsky has two rather lengthy novels (Crime & Punishment, and The Brothers Karamazov), and it seemed like if people were caught behind in the course, it was because of these books. I would strongly recommend reading these two novels in the summer or winter prior to taking this course. It will make your life a lot easier (you can just skim them instead of re-reading) and will definitely make lecture much more enjoyable. All in all, if you have an interest in Dostoevsky (and you should, 'cause he's wicked awesome), I'd recommend this class wholeheartedly.
