DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This is one of the worst decisions I have made here at the University of Virginia. Professor Schmidt loves to go on rants that make zero sense and she has no structure to her class. She still uses a syllabus from 3+ years ago and doesn't even bother to change the dates. She expects you to become a scholar in the material when she does not even go over most of it in class. Her grading is WACK and she does not grade timely or post grades so you will never know what you have in the class. The readings are SO long and extremely boring, much like the class. The readings also contain a bunch of useless information that nobody needs to know. She definitely also plays favorites so it is highly unfair if you are not one of her favorites. It is extremely difficult to make it through her class without falling asleep or having your hand cramp up as you try and write down every word of her rants that make no sense. If you do decide to try and fill a requirement with this class, make sure you are ready to hear her talk about all of her work experience and say the phrase "ya know" at least once every 5 seconds. :) friendly advice from someone who has taken classes that were actually meant to be hard... DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
The class is an absurd amount of reading that isn't interesting or pertinent to the class. Professor Schmidt is probably one of the most mundane lecturers one could ever have. She constantly reiterates herself and never ceases to stop blowing smoke up her own ass by constantly reminding the class of her anthropological studies. She grades very subjectively depending on how much she actually SKIMS your paper. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS... unless your GPA has a death wish
This class has so much reading that is not required. Their is a weekly assignment off of the readings each week, however, you do not have to do all the reading to answer these questions. Their is one essay that is 5-7pages in length that is very easy to bs your way through. The tests are super easy, if you do the study guide. I do not recommend this class unless you are using it simply for credit, and even then, its a last choice. Easy B. Probably an easy A if you can find something to be slightly interested in.
I would not recommend this class. There is an absurd amount of reading, but none of it is technically required so I often just didn't do it and still did okay. Professor Schmidt likes to ramble, and it is hard to understand what she is trying to convey frequently. I feel like there was a lot of opportunity to learn in this class, but I remember very little. Tests were reasonable if you do the study guide, and the essay is very easily bullshitted.
Just don't do it. The amount of reading is excessive, long, and dense (unless you like the material). Her lectures put people to sleep and are all over the place. She also can go on long tangents. We have weekly forums to write, 1 midterm, 1 paper, and 1 final. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone unless your major required it!
Professor Schmidt is all over the place during her lectures. She doesn't seem very organized and jumps back and forth from topic to topic. She expects you to be knowledgeable of a lot of terms and readings. Although some of the material is interesting, the amount of reading is excessive, there are weekly questions that have to be answered based on the reading and there's a midterm, writing assignment, and final. Overall I would not recommend this course, unless your desperate for something that counts toward your major.
