I originally took this class because it is an elective for the CSD major in the Ed. School. This class was very organized and not too difficult. Weekly readings and recorded lectures that were easy to follow along. 4 Quizzes, a project on our future career, and a midterm and final (open note). If you are going into education, special education, counseling/psych, or the SLP field I HIGHLY recommend. I recently shadowed an SLP in a school setting and I AM SO THANKFUL that I learned all the information from this class. You learn about different disabilities in the classroom and how to support your students. You learn laws, regulations, terminology, etc that is all 100% completely applicable to your future career. As part of the special ed team you will be a part of helping determining how you can help each student, and learning about what each kid is entitled to and how IEP meetings work, etc.. will all help you in the education field. 10/10 and they offer it online. TAKE IT.
Prof. Therrian implemented a flipped classroom system that I found incredibly useful (it was just a few videos and articles to keep you thinking about the weekly topic). No textbook required, exams are open note, and we only met once a week for 1.5 hours -- what a steal. Some may find this topic uninteresting, but I believe that it is incredibly important for us to recognize that we will have to work with people who have special needs at some point in our lives and that it is our job to be as accepting and accommodating as possible. This class provides an overview of different disabilities. Nothing too technical and honestly a lot of it is common sense. It sucks that this is a 3 credit class, but if you're trying to make dean's list and are willing to open your mind I really recommend it.
I feel like this class had a lot of potential, but I do not feel as though I got a lot out of it, and it was organized poorly. Although the topic is super interesting, the lectures feel somewhat like common sense knowledge/only give surface level info, and I am not sure if i really learned anything THAT new. That being said, you can definitely get an A because the quizzes and discussion posts are super easy
The material is pretty easy, but it's just a lot of information to consider and apply, making it a hard class to actually get an A on. The exams are not just MC, but short answers and essays. The TA is really picky for some answers so you lose a lot of unnecessary points. Don't bother going to her office to argue for your points because she'll just admit that she's picky and won't do anything. You also can't even keep your exams, which is frustrating because the final is cummulative. The averages for the exams are B's; in my opinion, that's not that great, so I wouldn't recommend if you want an easy A. The teacher is boring and dull. You have to watch online lectures before you come to class, and he just reiterates what was on the lectures while adding some new info, which could or could not be on the exam. I am in expecting I'd like the class because the topic is interesting, but nope, Therrien doesn't motivate me to actually engage in the class. It could have been much better with a different professor.
