I took this class online, so some things may be different in person. Loncke is a great professor! He’s fun, approachable, good at explaining concepts, and he loves teaching. Loncke likes class participation and he calls on random people a lot in class, which I didn’t mind, but it may not be so good for you if you don’t like being put on the spot. He encouraged us to turn on our cameras, but he didn’t force us. He is very lax and the test questions are straightforward, so as long as you pay attention in class and review your notes, this class is an easy A. There is no textbook (though there may be a textbook if this class is taught in person). We had 2-3 synchronous classes and 2-3 asynchronous modules each week. The synchronous and asynchronous classes ranged from about 50 minutes to 90 minutes each. There are embedded questions in the asynchronous and synchronous lectures which are easy to answer if you pay attention (he uses PollEverywhere, which is similar to iClicker). We submitted a 1-2 minute introductory video of ourselves (which is shared with the whole class), videotaped a 5 minute interview with a friend, watched 4 movies and took short quizzes about them, wrote a paper about an article in a linguistics journal, made an infographic and presented it to the class, and had a midterm and final. This class also satisfies the second writing requirement. I highly recommend this class if you’re interested in psychology and/or linguistics!
This is a 4000 course but can be easily taken by ANY first/second year. It's so interactive and fun, and Prof. Loncke genuinely cares about every one of his students and tries to make sure everyone understands him. A few negatives: he tends to talk very fast and his exams can be a little challenging because he does not necessarily cover some of his question topics in class, though he claims all question topics are covered in class. Read the textbook, it helps a lot. Choose group topics that relate to you because it becomes that much more fun and that much easier. I ended up with an A. Overall, a fun class!
I loved this class! Professor Loncke was so kind and I really enjoyed his class. I would and will be recommending it to people I like lol. It wasn't extremely difficult, and he really wants you to do well without trying to trick you, which I really appreciated. He willingly took the time to explain things that I did not understand until I fully understood them-- I never felt uncomfortable approaching him. You do not have to spend your money on the book (I did). Study your notes thoroughly, show up and pay attention in class, and you will be do well! I really wish all my professors at UVa were more like Professor Loncke. I finished with an A. So grateful for him!
