I think Simmons is a law school professor, and he's a really, REALLY smart guy - the stuff he says in lecture would make anyone second guess their own opinions, political or not, and he's very good at making both sides of the story seem reasonable. My TA was awful, though, and although the midterm and final are pretty easy if you've studied, the papers are hard to get an A on. (Basically - you'll get an easy B in this class, but no one I knew did better than a B+.) The readings are mostly interesting, sometimes repetitive, and always long, and lectures - while always good - are easy to fall asleep in...kind of a soothing, grandfatherly-like sound....
Simmons is very, very smart, and his lectures are always interesting. He says a lot of controversial liberal things, but you can ignore them. The reading is minimal and always covered in lecture, which is a refreshing contrast to most professors who ignore the reading they assign. I don't know about others, but I thought this class was rather easy.
Great class, very interesting if you have already have an interest in the subject matter. Simmons is a very smart guy. You grade, however, is determined completely by the TA, so it could be hit or miss. There are two papers which really cause you to think about the material and your thoughts on some controversial issue. The midterms are difficult if you havent studied a lot, but they are fair. All in all, a great class.
Simmons definitely knows what he's talking about. Like the others have noted, he is very open and liberal about his choice of vocabulary and methods of presentation in lecture, which makes it all the more enjoyable. The TAs are responsible for your grades so show up to discussion section. Attendance in lecture is important for exams and papers so I would highly suggest making a strong effort to be present. Other than that, a great class!
Simmons is a great lecturer. However, the most important part of class is discussion. That's where you get a feel for the readings, and if you have a good TA, you can have really engaging group discussions about the topics. Simmons' tests are fairly straightforward. The papers are the hardest part, but are managable if you know how to write a philosophy paper.
