I don't recommend taking this class unless you are majoring in media studies. Otherwise, it is a waste of time and work. The topics in class were interesting, but there was an overwhelming amount of reading, in addition to weekly quizzes and a digital portfolio. Francesca Tripodi is the best Media Studies TA and prepares you well for exams by going over the main points. The in-class lectures were sometimes hard to get through because they mainly consisted of Siva going off on a tangent and playing YouTube clips for us.
While Prof. Siva was an enthusiastic lecturer, he pretty much just repeated all of the material from the books. No need to go to lecture though his Skype interviews with media scholars are pretty interesting. You will drop a lot of dough on textbooks and won't be able to get rid of them to easily. Get Ahrum as a TA he is the best and is open to new ideas. Highly recommend this class
Francesca was a great TA- very helpful, laid back, and straightforward. Siva is an awesome professor. He keeps you interested throughout lecture and provides interesting material as homework assignments. Exams and papers are not to be taken lightly. A lot of reading for each week (can sometimes be a book a week) but again, it's interesting and manageable.
Only Media Studies class I've taken and found it to be fairly enjoyable. Also one of the easiest classes I've taken at UVa. It's not a very useful course, but as an elective it can't hurt. I got stuck with an unfortunately timed discussion section and the section itself could be rather mind-numbing, would definitely have preferred to just have the lecture.
