AMAZING MATH CLASS!! If you just need to take a math class for the requirement, take this class. It is so easy to get an A in. First, you only need to get above a 92 to get an A. Grade is 30% tests, so each of the 3 tests is 10% of your grade. Then another 10% is participation, which is just showing up to class. Another 10% is the homework, which is completion. Then another 10% is weekly quizzes, which are 5-6 questions, very easy. Then 20% is 2 projects and the last 20% is the final, which you can exempt. I did 1 hour of work MAX each week for this class and was able to get an A in the class. The topics for the course were - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and various visual representations of base ten units, positive and negative numbers, and topics similar to these. Professor Choi is so understanding and nice and base the 8 am lectures better. SHe responds to emails so quick and is very kind with stepping through material in class when someone has a question. I loved this class so much that I am taking another one of her math classes next semester!
Professor Choi is pretty great- she is probably one of the nicest profs I've had at UVA. It is definitely an easy math class to take for any math requirement. Some people did struggle a bit, but I am not a math person at ALL and was able to easily finish with an A. I would highly, highly, recommend paying a lot of attention during lecture and writing down all examples, as well as doing all of the homework and reviewing the homework in-depth before quizzes or exams, because a lot of the same stuff shows up. She definitely gives you the material to get A's on every quiz and exam, as long as you actually do the assigned homework and ask questions if you don't understand. Sometimes class can drag on and on because she focuses on easy concepts for too long, but even this didn't bother me too much since it just shows that she really wants to be sure that everyone understands the concepts. She did assign a bit too much homework when Covid first hit and we had to abruptly go online, but I think this was just her confusion with the online format and hopefully by now she has figured out how to make the homework more manageable. BUT, some concepts are challenging and won't be the easiest thing to grasp. She always offers office hours though, and as I said, doing the homework and actually studying it before any exam/quiz is the best way to do well in this class.
