MATH 1160

This class was both easy and frustrating. It was easy, because Thomasey did not really teach the material in the right way (which I admit is difficult since it is elementary-level content). It was frustrating, because I actually wanted to gain something from the course since I plan on teaching elementary school students. I think Thomasey should have used the textbook a lot more than he did. The textbook does a great job of combining easy content with more challenging modes of understanding that content. If you are taking the class for an easy A/math credit, I would say don't get the textbook at all. If you want to teach elementary school, I would absolutely recommend the textbook. While I do think Thomasey was not the greatest instructor, he was very enthusiastic and receptive to feedback.

One of the easiest courses I've taken at UVA. However, I have a few warnings: (1) Thomasey will take off a ridiculous amount of points for small errors. The top of your papers will say -2, but that -2 will be out of 10, for instance. (2) He loves manipulatives, so take careful notes on those.

The material itself was pretty easy, in my opinion. I got an A+ with minimal effort, and it got one of the dreaded math/science requirements out of the way.
