This class is fantastic. Professor Clay is learned, enthusiastic, kind, and quite a character. Virgil's Eclogues are fascinating, and Professor Clay helps reveal how intricate and clever the ten eclogues are as a whole and what a genius Virgil was. If you enjoy Latin/Latin poetry for sure take this course. The poems are beautifully written, engaging, and fascinating. By no means are any of Virgil's works dry or boring to read. The workload averaged about 60-100 lines of poetry due each week plus 2 or 3 articles about the current eclogue. Sometimes the articles could be long so don't first view them right before class. In class, Professor Clay would choose at random a student to translate 4-5 lines of poetry until the entire eclogue was finished. You are expected to come to class with the poem fairly well translated beforehand, but she isn't harsh if you have a question or make a few mistakes. The class dynamic is not stressful and the subject is rewarding. If you need a language requirement, are majoring/minoring in Classics, or just love Latin and/or poetry, take this class. You won't regret it.
