Honestly I'm a STEM major and I LOVED this class. Not only does it take out both the History and Non Western Perspectives requirements, its also SUPER interesting and gives you a lot of context on what's going on in the middle east, and the history around it. The KEY to this class is doing the readings and taking notes on them. We have bi-weekly 1 page writings we have to do about the readings. What I did was read them, then copy and paste important info into a separate document, and then create the weekly writing from there. KEEP ALL OF THESE NOTES because they will be SO useful for the take home final (you're given like 2 weeks for it) and it saves so much time because you don't have to go through each reading all over again. The weekly writings will also be really useful for the final and the one essay you have to write. I did all the readings and took important pieces out, and because of this, I NEVER had to take notes in class. Not even once, because the readings are the more in-depth content of what she lectures about, and I ended up getting like a 98 in the course (she's a really good lecturer though so I definitely listened, just didn't write anything down). Overall great class, HIGHLY recommended. she's a GREAT professor, kind, understanding, and gives you all possible perspectives and does not project any of her personal bias at all. this class will give you so much more insight into relevant conflicts in the middle east, and its a very interesting course curriculum. 10/10 would take again
I took this over the summer so reading was a lot, but this was an amazing class. Professor Alff is incredible and explains the material well. Only discussion was mandatory (once a week for 50 minutes) but during the week we met for 45 minutes to talk about readings and lecture which wasn't mandatory but was so helpful. This class was interesting and so were the films we watched. I 10/10 recommend the class. If you do the readings and ask her questions you will succeed.
