Great class. Reading is long but manageable (and very interesting). You cover the Empire from Ireland to the Falklands. Somewhere around 30-40% of the course covers India. It is mostly political history. Grading was fair and not overly difficult.
I also took Professor Linstrum's Modern Britain course and thought this was more interesting material. Plus Linstrum is a great teacher, very engaging.
Really interesting class on the British Empire, and fairly easy as far as History classes go. Linstrum is a great lecturer, and really knows his stuff- although he paces a lot which is distracting. He also provides handouts for each lecture which is really nice. Grade comes from midterm, final, two papers, and participation in discussion. The midterm and final are both fair, and he gives you the essay prompts in advance, so it's very doable with a little effort, and the reading is manageable. I would definitely recommend this class.
This is a really interesting class and Linstrum has tried really hard to make the most out of the truncated semester. Your grade consists of 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. The papers are largely based on the readings, and you can discuss them with your TA which I would recommend. The midterms are online synchronous and open note with the essay prompts given in advance. Overall a very reasonable class that covers a lot of interesting information.
This class is really good at giving a really insightful about global history and how it effects the real world. Not only will this class teach you about the history of Empire, but also how it continues to effect the present world. Professor Linstrum is very knowledgable and is very helpful during office hours! I found this class relatively easy. The 2 papers do not require outside research; they are based off of our readings. Very much recommend if you are interested in the British Empire and world history overall
I thought this class was extremely fascinating. Professor Linstrum is an excellent lecturer who made 50 minute classes fly by. His lectures are superbly structured and I cannot recommend him enough. He provides lecture handouts to give you an outline of the class's lecture that are also super useful when studying for exams. The material is interesting, covering much of the British Empire from the 1500s to late 20th century in depth. There was a solid amount of reading (~150 pages a week) but a lot of it was actually pretty straightforward and interesting.
Grade Breakdown:
15%: 1st Paper
15%: In class midterm (a few IDs, a couple short answers related to the readings, and a longer essay)
20%: 2nd paper
20%: Discussion participation
30%: In class final exam (similar to midterm)
I am by no means a history major, that being said I learned SO much. At first I was nervous to enroll in a class that restricts any electronics, doesn't have or post slides, and doesn't allow you to record lectures, but this has honestly been for the better because it has forced me to actually learn and not copy slides while using the lecturer as background noise, but this also means you HAVE to attend class. No matter what. Professor Linstrum is an amazing lecturer, the review that said the 50 min lecture flies by was not lying he's also so so nice, his office hours are always a blast and the TA's are even better if thats possible!). My only gripes are the readings. In my opinion the readings were not stimulating, it is just 150 pages each week of some person from the 1800's rambling on, while it is crucial that you read them so you can participate in lecture/get a good grade on the pop quizzes (the TA gives quizzes more often if there is less participation so keep that in mind) the discussions did an amazing job of summarizing the readings I would recommend you go and TAKE NOTES it will be so helpful when studying for tests/writing the papers (Paper #1 is 6-8 pages, Paper#2 is 7-10). All of the tests are in person and proctored, he does not give out the essay prompt in advance anymore (since a lot of people this semester used chat so he will most likely make this rule permanent).
Overall I would say
1)Linstrum and the TA (Evan) makes the class worthwhile
2)You have to put the work in 100% of the time (for people that are just taking this class for the historical perspectives this might not be worth it, but if you have even a remote interest for history I would recommend)
