I cannot recommend Professor Seeley's class enough!!! He is very knowledgeable about the subject and is willing to share it with you. You have to do some readings but you can't complain because it is a History class plus the readings are quite interesting. There are 1 midterm, 1 final (20% each), 3 ID term quizzes (20%, the lowest gets dropped), participation (you get 20% unless you miss more than 3 meetings with no excuse) and one Film essay (20%). As long as you do the work and attend the class meetings you will be fine. It might not be an easy A class but his class is pretty fair so you will get what you deserve.
Overall I was very happy that I took this class with him and I would recommed this class to anyone!!!
Professor Seeley is such an amazing professor I can not stress enough how much I enjoyed his class and having him as a professor. Every class he greets the class with a smile and works to create a welcoming learning environment for his students. The class is extremely mangeable and does not require too much work outside of class, being one of the easier classes I had. The class was designed in a way so that class on Tuesday was lecture by the professor while Thursday was solely discussion within small groups and the entire class. There are 3 ID quizzes throughout the semester in which students have to recall and write the definition, significance, and 2 supporting details for one ID. Professor Seeley posts the possible IDS ahead of time on the syllabus allowing students to prepare for ahead while only quizzing on 2 IDS which he has randomly chosen in class. I did not find it difficult at all to prepare for these ID quizzes. In the shift to remote instruction, we instead got to pick 4 IDS to submit which were also open note. The midterm and final exam ended up being open note due to the shift to remote instruction however they consists of an ID portion and essay(s) portion and I did not find the essay portion too particularly difficult to respond too. He also gave an extra credit opportunity for the midterm exam if students watched a film showing for Bong Joon-Ho. The in-class lectures were interesting as he often included clips of youtube videos, cartoons/korean dramas, and memes in order to supplement his lectures. The discussion I felt were extremely interesting and were not stressful as students would group up in groups of 4-5 and then elect a group spokesperson who would talk about what they discussed to the entire class. Additionally the readings assigned for discussion were mostly short being only about 3-10 pages with a couple longer readings. Overall I would definitely take this class if you're looking to fulfill a Historical Studies and/or Non-Western Perspectives requirement for the College!
