Yes Prof. Howard makes you want to fall asleep but this class is great. He is very knowledgeable and is passionate about it. The class overall is easy. You can skip and won't miss much; just review the PowerPoint and google search anything that's not making sense. Don't buy the books. Study his study guides and if you can, study with a group or share a Google doc and upload the answers to it.
Professor Howard knows his stuff. He occasionally makes jokes that are space related. Really niec man. Unfortunately, his monotoneish voice makes it hard to stay awake in class. He likes to turn all the lights out during lecture. Material is interesting. He takes forever to grade tests. Know the study guides he gives out. Don't worry about doing the reading. Keep in mind the 10 page paper at the end of the year plus the final.
This was with Dr. Alan Howard, not Howard K.
this class was great, Dr. Howard is a good lecturer but as others will say he does have a mono-tone, this never bothered me. Just drink some coffee before hand and pay attention, good notes. He posts slides but they won't make sense without relevant notes obviously. this may be a 4000 level class but don't let that fool you, Dr. Howard takes you from the basics all the way up to the most current research and events. Not much math if any at all, just a few (3 I think, maybe 4) exams and a final paper (12 pages or so, this is the majority of the work). Can't say anything about the lab since not enough people signed up for it (spring 2011). also didn't need the textbooks what information you need you can look up online or check the books he places on reserve. just start reviewing material 3 days before the exam date and you should do fine.
