This is a fantastic class and a big divergence from any other CS class you'll take at UVA. Computer Graphics is an incredibly complex and varied field and this class covers a lot of the basics in an interesting and engaging way. Tychonievich takes you on a wonderful journey starting at getting basic 2D shapes on a screen all the way to rendering fully realized 3D objects with animation, all through the lens of solving the problems posed by simulating the visible world in a computer. Also, Tychonievich is the best professor in the CS department bar none. If you have the opportunity to take this class, it will not dissappoint.
This class is really cool and Prof. Tychonievich is super knowledgeable and engaging. The assignments take a decent amount of effort, but are completely doable with their respective writeups/info from lecture. The assignment structure is also pretty fun, since you get to choose what you work on (to an extent, of course). The weekly quizzes were a little tricky, but there's tons of extra credit opportunities so you don't have to worry about grades too much if you care about the class. This course gives a great overview of graphics (from the beginnings to more modern techniques) and opens your eyes up to the field-- my only regret is that more graphics courses aren't taught here. Overall, would recommend if you're even mildly interested in the subject, or if you just want to develop an appreciation of the beauty of the world.
The class is awesome! Tychonievich is a really good professor and he knows EVERYTHING about the topic and seems like he knows everything about everything... he's also super understanding and gives hw extensions if u need them. BUT the class is actually quite hard be prepared to actually do work. Don't take this if you want an easy CS elective, take it if you want a really GOOD elective though. It's super math heavy and coding heavy. I took it hoping for an easy class and ended up having to try quite hard in the class, but I got a lot out of it. I learned a lot and I was actually proud of my graphics that I produced for each hw assignment! Go for it if you have time to commit to this class. You won't regret it
