ECON 4160 is known for being one of the harder 4000 level electives in the economics department, and for good reason. The assignments are very much theory based with some application of material to real-world subject matter. The exams were fair, but difficult. It's important that you start studying for the midterm and final well in advance in order to do well. Pulling an all-nighter before the exam will not do the job. Also, just make sure that you remember to do the things that net you easy points. The Collab forum discussion post, the paper questions, and the course evaluation (yes, the eval is required and you lose points for not doing it, but it's an easy 1-2% of your overall grade you can nab). Professor Miller is extraordinarily passionate about the subject and she made the class as fun as she could. 2 PM classes are really not the move for me because I fall asleep regardless of the class, but don't let that discourage you. This class is for anyone interested in health economics (obviously), hopeful DMPs (Professor Miller helps run the distinguished major program), anyone interested in graduate econ at UVA or elsewhere (you have opportunities to get acquainted with the graduate TA and other UVA econ graduate students). Just be ready to put in the work if you do take this class. From what I gathered, the difference between an A- and B/B- was virtually nothing, especially in a bell curve class with only around 25 students total.
