Mr. Coppock is an incredibly gifted teacher. It's obvious that he puts a lot of time and energy into preparing for class. His lectures are engaging and fun! (Be sure to do the readings before class. )
Most importantly, Mr. Coppock really cares about his students. He is generous with his time in office hours and really wants you to succeed in his class and in life. Definitely take this class!
An amazing class. I wasn't a huge fan of Coppock after taking Macro with him, but he is by far my favorite professor from my experience in this class. You do have to do the reading (it's a small class, he cares if you read and he will notice if you don't and make you feel awful for it) and if you want a decent grade you need to attend EVERY class and take good notes - his exams are a lot of memorization of his lectures, but he explicitly teaches you everything you need to know. Overall, definitely take this class if you can.
This was hands down the best class i've taken at UVA. There is a fair amount of reading but most of it is quite interesting, and professor Coppock does a great job of making the more complicated stuff make sense. You definitely have to work hard for a good grade, but Coppock is very helpful at office hours and genuinely wants his students to succeed. You absolutely HAVE to go to class, as he covers a ton of material every day. Overall it is a challenging course, but if you're like me it will totally change the way you look at economics and politics. Highly recommend this class.
You just can't go wrong with Coppock. You do have to be prepared to work hard and to be intellectually challenged - you can't really have fun if you just want to get by. That said, if you are a Econ major, this class will stay with you and benefit you in so many different ways in the future. If you're taking it for Professor Coppock, it's still totally worth the while. He is an amazing teacher, if you really engage yourself in the class you will find it so rewarding.
Easily the best Economics course I have taken at this school. Coppock keeps the lectures very interesting and does a great job of giving examples to help explain more difficult concepts. Overall very doable class (B+/A-) if you don't skip lecture, do the readings, and maintain a solid interest in the material. Highly recommend taking this class.
Definitely apply to get in the class, and if he lets you in, you'd be a fool not to take this class. He tries to scare you on the first day of class but if you do the readings, go to lectures and study in advance for the exams you won't get below a B. Without a doubt, the BEST class I've taken at UVA. Each topic is super interesting, and Coppock makes everything easy to understand in lecture. On that note -- don't miss lectures...ever. Also don't go to lecture if you're not ready to participate. You learn nearly everything you need for exams in lecture, and if you don't go to lecture following a tough reading you'll be totally lost. While some of the readings include math proofs and expansions, you can almost always gloss over those; math isn't something that is stressed in this course, which is nice. The class is definitely more about understanding concepts and applying them. This is one of those few courses where I plan to save all of my notes and readings so I can read them later on -- the material is that fascinating.
Hands down, best class I have taken at UVA. Professor Coppock is one of my all time favorite professors as well after this class. This class is great because you get to study the seminal works of public choice economics by reading the original research papers. And even though they can get pretty confusing, Professor Coppock always makes sure to explain things well in class the next day. The material is really interesting, Professor Coppock is really kind and wants to know all the students and works to make sure they succeed, and the class is an unforgettable experience. If you can get into the class, definitely take it! #tCF2020
