This class was much harder than I anticipated. I had a hard time connecting to the material, it was not very interesting. I thought the class would be more policy-based but it was more math-heavy than expected and more Intermediate Macro/Micro mathematics, not Intro Micro/Macro. The test questions were so tricky too (unless you like SAT style questions that aren't based on the material) and you always ran out of time. I would probably not take this class so long as it is online because it was always a rushed lecture and the expectations were unclear. The other course forum comments are not very useful.
Learned some interesting things in this class. Whether or not you do the readings it is very helpful to know what they are about for the tests. Group paper. Problem sets. Gives the most important slides on a handout for every class. Sometimes her lectures were sometimes confusing and sometimes she mis-spoke and confused me, but you have the important information on the slides. She is genuinely wants to see you do will and will be very helpful in terms of giving practice midterms and being available for office hours. Ignacio TAed and tended to tell us that everything was "so easy" when really discussion just confused the hell out of me. However, new material is covered in discussion, often problem set stuff, and sometimes you might be tested on it. Ignacio didn't come to class so there was definitely some disconnect between lecture and discussion. Harder class than I thought it would be.
A very interesting class. Do the readings and the problems sets very carefully. Attend class and make sure to understand her slides. Most of what comes on the midterms and final is based on her slides and the problem sets. However, reading the articles is also important.
She likes to repeat previous midterm/final questions so it would definitely help to review them.
Prof. Turner is very enthusiastic, and she is also one of the leading researchers in the field of the Economics of Education. She is very accessible, and invites the whole class to dinner at her home (Pav VII). Grading it fair, but tough at times. You don't really HAVE to do the readings to do well, but it makes it a lot easier for the midterms. First midterm is mostly calculations, second is mostly questions about the readings (but all of these were discussed in class, so not doing the reading didn't hurt if you went to class). Also, don't show up late, that makes her mad. Go to class on time, or don't go at all. Good class.
This class is great for 2nd year econ majors that are just getting into real econ classes. Turner is very involved with her students and insists on getting feedback to make sure everyone is doing alright. She's very accessible, as are the TAs for the most part. This class is easy if you keep up and do the readings.
Class wasn't too hard though you had to take it seriously to do well. Professor Turner cares a lot about both her students and the subject she teaches and you can tell. There is a lot of reading but you only need to skim things to be able to write about them on tests. I would recommend this if you are interested in the subject. I took it just as a filler class and it ended up not being that worthwhile.
