ECON 302 is a major requirement but not an interesting subject to begin with, and Mr. Mukoyama makes it unbearable. He has never taught a big class before this semester, has limited English-speaking ability, and basically just reads his PPT slides. On tests, he awards little partial credit and is completely unflexible when you talk to him, even raising his voice! Stay away.
Tolerable course, miserable teacher. His inability to speak English is rivaled only by his inability to deal with people when he is approached for questions. He reads straight from the PPT slides (making class attendance utterly useless), and he doesn't explain in any coherent way any of the few 302 concepts that aren't completely logical (i.e. Solow model). Awful teacher.
This is the worst class I have taken at UVA. The professor reads straight off of his powerpoint slides, which simply paraphrase the textbook. The material is straightforward if you read the textbook, but there is no reason to even come to class. He has difficulty speaking English. Exams are fair and not too difficult if you understand the textbook.
Econ 302 seems to be a reltively hard subject to teach, as I've realized that most 302 professors are shot down by the students. Mukoyama was very enthusiastic in the beginning and was actulally good, but towards the end he stopped caring and became a very creppy professor. The class isn;t particularly difficult. Poe is the man!
What everyone else has already said is entirely true. He remained nice and enthusiastic throughout the semester but reading straight from the powerpoints didn't explain things a bit. You have to teach yourself and the exams (especially the second one) are ridiculously hard. I'd definitely recommend another professor.
