Jieran really made the class make sense, Toshi is a very simple lecturer and sometimes misses running through the fine points that really make the subject click. Overall an easy class though. If you mess up the midterm the weight is shifted to the final. Homeworks are graded on completion, not right or wrong.
Easiest class I have taken at UVA. Make sure you go to class at take notes (pretty easy to do since he writes EVERYTHING on the board). Homework is graded on effort. The final is worth 60% of your grade which may seem daunting but it is very easy and based on the things he focused on in class. Don't need to read the book - in fact you could save yourself some money and just not buy it.
Understand lecture notes (follow along during class and copy down everything he writes on board) and homework (go to discussions if you don't understand the answer key posted online) and you will do fine on the midterm and final. There are alot more math questions on the final, but you don't really need to solve for anything; make sure you understand the proof for each equation and how everything is derived and the math questions will be a breeze.
This is probably the best option out there for taking Econ 302. Mukoyama is not a very interesting lecturer, but if you take good notes and do the homework You should be okay. The homeworks are easy, and if you do miss a lecture or two you can find the exact topic in the textbook (probably more clearly explained than when Mukoyama teaches it). Midterm and Final make up 90% of your grade, and the dutch knockout is in effect. Study your homeworks well for both and you should be okay.
What everyone else has already said is entirely true. He remained nice and enthusiastic throughout the semester but reading straight from the powerpoints didn't explain things a bit. You have to teach yourself and the exams (especially the second one) are ridiculously hard. I'd definitely recommend another professor.
Econ 302 seems to be a reltively hard subject to teach, as I've realized that most 302 professors are shot down by the students. Mukoyama was very enthusiastic in the beginning and was actulally good, but towards the end he stopped caring and became a very creppy professor. The class isn;t particularly difficult. Poe is the man!
This is the worst class I have taken at UVA. The professor reads straight off of his powerpoint slides, which simply paraphrase the textbook. The material is straightforward if you read the textbook, but there is no reason to even come to class. He has difficulty speaking English. Exams are fair and not too difficult if you understand the textbook.
Tolerable course, miserable teacher. His inability to speak English is rivaled only by his inability to deal with people when he is approached for questions. He reads straight from the PPT slides (making class attendance utterly useless), and he doesn't explain in any coherent way any of the few 302 concepts that aren't completely logical (i.e. Solow model). Awful teacher.
ECON 302 is a major requirement but not an interesting subject to begin with, and Mr. Mukoyama makes it unbearable. He has never taught a big class before this semester, has limited English-speaking ability, and basically just reads his PPT slides. On tests, he awards little partial credit and is completely unflexible when you talk to him, even raising his voice! Stay away.
