Santugini is one of the nicest and most caring profs but his class was pretty intense. he jumped right into it on the first day with no review and will move with lightning speed through the subject. he covers quite a lot and will have your head spinning at times but he's always available to help students. be prepared for advanced calc, this class is math-heavy and will feel more like a calc class than econ course. very challenging material and the HW will literally take you hours to even attempt. good luck!
Great class! He writes down literally everything he says on the board. If you know the lecture notes well, then there won't be any surprises on the tests. Extremely approachable during office hours. The HW's tend to have tedious algebra, but again if you understand them the tests are VERY manageable.
Boy oh boy, Intermediate Micro, the big 3010, where do I even begin? I'll start off by saying that Santugini is my main man, real salt of the earth kind of guy. He's super enthusiastic when lecturing and from my understanding he is very helpful in his office hours and will respond to emails quickly when you're struggling with homeworks. The breakdown of the course grade is 10% HW (6 problem sets), 25% first midterm, 25% second midterm and 40% final. Also after the second midterm he told us that there would be a dutch knockout which was super clutch. I'm not sure if he was originally planning to do this and just waited until after the second midterm so that people would be trying the whole time, or if he was disappointed with our performance and decided to implement it, but in any event thank god he did. I really struggled with this course and didn't put in the time that you need to in order to do well. I kinda blew off the homeworks and relied on my groupmates to do most of them for me and I didn't study enough for the tests. I ended up doing around the average on the first test, but then I got absolutely destroyed by the second one (seriously I think the TA had to go through two full red pens to grade mine). After freaking out about this but having my shot at redemption thanks to the dutch knockout, naturally I continued to blow off the class (I still went to lectures but I stopped doing the HW entirely.) Then finals week came around and it was time to pay the piper. I was so overwhelmed by all of the material I had to learn in a few days and I spent sleepless night after sleepless night playing on my phone in clem. "What if I fail this test that accounts for 100% of my grade? Will I have to drop out and become a Clock Winder as my father once was, and his father before him?" I thought to myself. At last, it was test day. Ruler and number 2 pencil in hand, I was as ready as I was ever going to be. After three hours that felt no longer than three hours, it was finally, mercifully over. The next week I spent pacing in my room back and forth, wondering how I did. Then the fateful email came. I gulped as I read the subject line "Final Exams Graded." My heart was pounding, my palms were sweating, my knees were weak. I clicked the gradebook on Collab and there it was: a big old A smack dab in the middle of the screen. By some act of god I had gotten the A. Seriously, how the hell did that happen? I'm still in utter disbelief but I'll take it. The moral of the story is that Santugini is a really good lecturer. Go to class, copy down everything he writes on the board, study your notes and past exams and somehow ace the final. Best of luck out there.
Marc is a great professor and wants his students to succeed but this class is still very difficult. He requires you to do no outside reading and tests you on what he teaches in class. If you take this class make sure you go to lecture and write down EVERYTHING he says even if you don't understand it at the time. He was very helpful during office hours and made time to meet when I couldn't come during normal times.
With this review coming a semester late, this class is definitely tougher than ECON 2010 and may be considered a weed-out between those who want to continue studying Econ and those who don't. That being said, I'm happy I enrolled in Professor Santugini's class after studying in his ECON 2010 lecture the previous semester.
In terms of math, much of the course involves linear graphs, although there is some calculus involved. Most of that is basic derivatives though. There is a lot of dense material for this class however, so do not fall behind unless you want to see your grade tank. Both of the midterms were pretty tough, but there's also Dutch knockout if you need it after your final. Be sure to allocate enough time during your week toward the group problem sets, as most of these examples are pretty abstract and involve long and tough algebra. If you can get through these sets though, you can apply some of what you figured out in the problems toward the tests.
Although this course is tough, Professor Santugini is a nice guy who is always open with his office hours to clear any issues you encounter with the material. I liked how he quizzed us on what we learned at the end of each lecture to make sure we were following along with him. He also posted answers to each of these quizzes and emailed us explanations on how much credit we received based off our answers. If you're striving toward an Econ major, take this required class with Santugini.
Welcome to what I like to call "Calculus with Letters 101." Don't take all of these comments praising Santugini at face value. Is he cheery and fun? Yes, absolutely. Does this make someone an effective professor? Not necessarily.
The problem with this class is that the lecture leaves no time to think. Santugini will say, "Ok! Do this problem now on your own!" In the most enthusiastic manner imaginable. He will wait approximately 10 seconds. Then, he will do the problem himself and take about two minutes to do so. You will then move on while scrambling to copy down the solution before it gets erased. This is the pace of the class. The homework is rough and the exams are extremely challenging. I'll get downvoted for daring to criticize everyone's favorite god/soccer dad/best friend Santugini, but for those of you who have yet to take this course, consider a different professor. Santugini's energy is difficult to keep up with, and with content as difficult as Calculus with Letters, you will need time to breathe in lectures. That is my honest opinion and I hope it helps at least one person reading this.
