Micro with Troyan was one of the best courses I have taken at UVA. I wish most of the courses at UVA could be taught in the same manner, as anything he expected you to know was on the slides he taught from in class. He also didn't expect us to learn anything he didn't include on the slides, so the textbook he recommended was in no way required to do well in this course. The problem sets and practice exams he gave were very helpful and almost the same as the actual exams. Though one issue you could have is how long the problem sets were as they took me about 3 hours a week which I didn't find too bad especially since you could work in a group for them. Troyan also gave a very generous curve at the end of the semester as the exam scores for the class were pretty low. However, that was probably due to people probably not understanding the sections of the problem sets their other group members did and not taking the practice exams he provided. If you understood both the problem sets and practice exams which took maybe 1-2 hours of studying the exams were pretty straightforward. Though the exams did feel a bit rushed as I didn't have time to check over any of my answers. Also the exams are 28% each and there are 3 of them with none of them being dropped but they aren't cumulative.
Overall I'd say if you're willing to put in a few hours a week of work and studying a little bit for the exams its relatively easy to end in the A-/A/A+ range.
Troyan is a fine professor to take intermediate micro with. His lectures are pretty interesting but sometimes he gets too caught up in the content and just misses when students have questions. The problem sets are hard but prepare you decently well for the exam. Intermediate micro is just a difficult class to begin with so be prepared to do the work and you should be fine. #tCF25
