Sundberg a nice guy, and he'd probably be a lot more popular if he taught something other than organic chem- it's a pretty labor intensive class which I don't recommend if A) it's not required for your major/pre-med or B) you're taking and otherwise hard semester. This class pretty much sucks up your life
This class isn't going to be fun, obviously. It's organic chemistry and like every other chem class at UVA, it does its best to kill your soul. The second semester was a lot easier than the first, I thought, and as long as you do the readings and actually study before the exam, you'll be just fine. As with 2410, the problem sets boost grades and there's a pretty generous curve at the end.
Professor Sundberg's tests are difficult, as he expects you to know all of the material covered in the book, in addition to some supplemental material he introduces in lecture. He also moves through the material quickly in lecture; therefore, I found that lecture was most useful when I had completed the suggested reading beforehand. Professor Sundberg is really most useful, however, at his office hours, and he is fantastic there. He will spend hours answering problem set questions, and he was always willing to help me whenever I showed up at his office, even if I showed up outside of his regular office hours. Definitely study his old tests to do well, and seek out his help on the problem sets. Having taken Gerrans my first semester of orgo, I would recommend Sundberg over him. I thought Sundberg explained things better, and that I learned a lot more in his class. Also, I found that Gerrans tries to trick you on tests, whereas Sundberg's tests are very straightforward (just difficult, requiring knowledge of lots of intricate information). As I mentioned previously, do be sure to study all of the old tests that Sundberg posts online. Many of the questions are verbatim from the old tests.
