Professor Prpich teaches in a way I wish all ChemE professors would adopt; short but highly educational demonstration, group problems of real systems with real data that is applicable to those who want to work in biotech, and lectures that are not just a professor slogging through proofs on the board. You will learn more in this class than in most other ChemE courses, and though there is a [reasonable] time commitment on the homeworks, it will feel much lighter than other ChemE courses. The take home final, however, is brutally long, though not terribly difficult. The last day of class is a sort of symposium of sorts where each student brings in a product of a biochemical process (i.e. kombucha, kimchi, cheese, etc) and discusses the process while sampling with each other. And, all semester long, Professor Prpich's genuine interest and enthusiasm in his students' projects is infectious and creates a very positive and motivational learning environment. If you have even a slight interest in how biotechnology is produced, I cannot recommend this course and Professor Prpich enough.
Best class out of all the chemical engineering department in my personal opinion. Always take this class if you can. Professor Prpich is one of the friendliest professors in all of Chem E and I love his Canadian sense of humor. The class reminds you of high school class in the best possible way. I feel that there was very little distance between the professor and the class and we all had a good time. Both homeworks
and quizs are very reasonable. The group project is genuinely fun too. This class genuinely felt like an oasis in the desert of torment that is Chem E. One single thing that was bad in the class was the takehome final. It's not impossibly hard, but holy moly is it long. Hopefully. he's fixed by now. Anyway, I cannot recommend this class enough to any kids in chemical engineering. Work load, the professor, and the grade distributions are incredibly nice/reasonable. Please check this course out.
