Carta's one of those professors that are so smart, they don't remember what it's like to learn a new subject. He writes quickly, and taking notes is paramount to doing well on his exams and homework. The heat portion of the class is very relatable and easy to pick up, but the mass transfer part is much more difficult - despite him constantly saying that they are the same thing.
Some of his exam questions are more 'logic puzzle' than conceptual, but it's an overall reasonable class. Definitely easier than Transport 1 or Unit Ops.
I knew I was in trouble when I saw that this class was at 9am, and I was right. Carta is a good professor, I just couldn't make it to class... Heat transfer, the first half of the course, made sense and was pretty manageable. The 2nd half of the course is mass transfer, and that was a lot more difficult. Homeworks tend to take a while, but the grading system is pretty lenient (depends on your grader as well). Tests are taken out for a 3 hr window in a 3 day window. Being open note makes you think it is easy, but they're not. You will take the whole 3 hours as you flip through the textbook and many handouts. Don't slack on studying and try to do as many example problems and understand the concepts behind them as possible, including the ones Carta gives you for test prep. He doesn't give you the answers, but do them with your friends and go to the TA. One of the questions on the final was exactly like one on the practice example...unfortunately for me, I didn't do it beforehand.
