Santugini (Marc) is such a great and respectable professor. Every lecture was clear and easy to follow and he always posted his notes and slideshows on Collab. He is also a nice guy who will drop anything to help his students. In short - this is probably the most well-organized class I have ever taken. Workload each week is extremely light. Now, I got an A- in the class. In order to get an A, I honestly think you need to never disregard doing homeworks and practice problems each week. I slacked off on a few of these in the semester and it definitely hurt my path to an A. In short, this class is very manageable and Marc is a perfect professor for it. You also must put in good work to get an A in this class. There also is a huge curve at the end, but do not rely on this.
The way he teaches econ is VERY unique, so you will be unable to get help from the internet and the textbook. Midterms were difficult with problems that were unlike any of the example problems or homeworks. I have never taken a class with Elzinga but all my friends who had him had a much easier time in Microecon than I did. I seriously regret not taking this course under Elzinga.
TL;DR Santugini is a very nice man, however his style of teaching is very quick and not necessarily intuitive to the average person not looking to go into comm/econ.
This class wasn't microeconomics...it was tedious math. I didn't feel like I learned econ, because every test I was worried about if I made one calculation wrong or if I forgot to label one part of the line. That shouldn't be how econ is taught. It helps that you don't have to read a textbook, but I feel like Santugini's math based style is arguably worse than a regular microeconomics class.
I know taking this class with Elzinga is a UVA bucket list, but if you take it with Santiguini you'll be fine. The tests are moderate and don't have high averages, but the multiple choice final is SO easy and will dutch-knockout your entire grade. If you don't care about taking the class with Elzinga, take it with Marc. Also definitely do NOT bother spending money on a textbook, and if you get the concepts you can stop going to class once you meet the clicker threshold (all the lectures are online).
Having (almost) completed this course as a first year with no economics background, I would HIGHLY recommend taking this course with Professor Santugini. I'm not sure if he made this semester easier (averages on the two midterms were 88 and 86) but the class is manageable. A huge plus to this class in my opinion is that there is essentially no outside reading necessary (do not buy the textbook). The take home parts can be a bit tricky, but go to the TA office hours right before they are released and you should be okay. Marc is such an enthusiastic professor who really loves what he teaches, and connects most lectures to a real life example. A lot of these reviews sound daunting, but this was probably my easiest class my first semester here. I wouldn't go as far as to say this class is an "easy A" but if you're willing to attend lecture, do the practice problems and homework, and study for tests, I would say an A is certainly manageable.
Coming into Marc's class I was a little worried, as everyone loves Elzinga so much and I did not want to miss out on a UVA 'bucket list' class. The reviews for this class circa 2016 when he first started teaching this class caused me some concern, but now in 2018 Santugini has definitely figured out a way to teach and organize his class in a way that works well. I am actually glad I ended up taking Santugini's class over Elzinga's. I am definitely more of a math person, so the fact that this class leans more towards doing math/graphs than it does conceptualization was helpful for me. There is no reading whatsoever required for this class, which is really nice (Elzinga's class has a lot of required reading) - instead of the readings there are weekly practice problems and homework, but it shouldn't take you more than an hour to do both of them. The practice problems help a lot in understanding the material as he can go fast in class sometimes, but as long as you keep up with the practice then you should be fine. The tests are very fair, he did not ask anything that we didn't already go over in class/practice problems. The final exam was difficult, but if you study and don't underestimate it then it is manageable. I actually really ended up enjoying Santugini, as his class is quite lively and he puts a lot of effort into individually helping his students. I'll miss his energetic attitude and look forward to taking another one of his classes in the future.
Many people told me to take ECON 2010 with Elzinga given how he's a legend. Having no background in economics whatsoever (I'm literally pre-med with 0 clue about econ), I kept switching between Elzinga and Santugini when signing up for courses before deciding on Santugini. I have 0 regrets choosing Santugini; he's one of the sweetest professors out there who genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them do well. Also he's so adorable (he uses his kids' names in like 90% of his practice problems). His midterms are basically the practice problems with the numbers changed up, and his midterm averages were 88 and 86, which is extremely forgiving.
Worried about an econ class that's centered around math? Don't. I'm extremely weak in math and still found this class very doable. The math he does this entire semester consists of graphs and linear equations, which he makes extremely understandable. Also, this class doesn't require a textbook, so basically no assigned readings. Attending lecture, going to discussion, and doing practice problems will definitely get you a good grade. Also attend his office hours because he's really helpful when you ask him questions one-on-one, and he shows that he cares because he asks you how you're doing and tries to get to know you. I'm not going to go as far as saying that it's easy to get an A in this class, but it's certainly doable. And also, Dutch knockout can really save your grade so make sure to study for that final!
I really enjoyed this class and thought it was graded fairly. This class is very analytical and uses a lot of equations and graphs to represent the concepts. I found that a lot of people who struggled with math struggled in this class. I also heard that a lot of students in Elzinga's class say that their class' second test was graded unfairly. I never thought that about Repiquet's (Santugini's) class and thought that he gave us a lot of opportunity to succeed. Study A LOT for the two tests and the final will be easy.
He is a really nice guy. Sometimes every gives things out in class. You can tell he is passionate about the subject and really wants everyone to succeed. The discussions are kinda boring (turn in homework, go over practice problems, take quiz) but the lecture is interesting. Would recommend because of his enthusiasm and good teaching ability. He can be quirky but is definitely a great option to learn the subject.
