Professor Santugini is a passionate, personable professor who clearly cares deeply about the content he is teaching and his students. The content and course instructions were conveyed clearly and grades were always prompt. There are a lot of weekly assignments for this course, but they really help you stay on top of the material and master the content of the course. Both Professor Santugini and the TAs were always available by direct message or office hours. Overall, this course helped me develop a better understanding and appreciation of economics. Highly recommend.
This class will likely be taken my first years first semester. It starts off easy and definitely gets more complex as the semester goes along and you need to keep up if you didn't take econ in high school. I recommend being very thorough on the take-home exams and taking your take on them. They are very time-consuming and cannot be left until the last moment. I am not a great test taker and got 80s on the in-person midterms but 100s on the take-homes so it averaged out. The final is very difficult but has a significant scale and isn't a huge portion of your grade. I got a 64 on the final but still ended with a B+. Now that I'm in 3010 with Santugini, I regret not using Teams messaging more during 2010. Learn how to use teams and take advantage of the resources he posts. He is super willing to help and I wish I took advantage of that because some of the concepts can be hard to grasp. There is no textbook and the lecture quizzes and homework are important to make sure you're understanding the content. Highly recommend an iPad for the class, that definitely would've helped me with my organization. Overall a necessary class for many UVA student and more math-focused and less conceptual than Elzinga's micro class.
Marc Santugini is probably the best teacher I have ever had, maybe not entirely in terms of teaching but in terms of making himself available to students. He is so connected to his students and makes it so easy to get help if needed. He utilizes Microsoft Teams and is extremely organized, something that I can definitely appreciate. While he was so great, this class was definitely not easy. It is not super work heavy during the week, with only 3 weekly reoccurring assignments (1 is optional), and discussion is also optional but you should go if you need practice. The first test was easier than the second test and final. I studied a ton with the final and still was struggling. If you have to take econ, Marc is a great option (if you like math and visual learning). I really enjoy math and have taken calculus I and II so the math was no issue for me, but I know others who semi struggled. Definitely a great teacher and recommend him or Doyle for Econ.
I took his course Spring 2023, but it wouldn't let me put that for some reason. I took this as a requirement for Comm school, and I do not like econ. I took AP micro in high school, so maybe that helped me understand it. Santugini is all about graphing! His class structure and exams are very different from the other professors, but I preferred it. I took paper notes, so I would recommend paper or iPad notes, especially to understand the graphs. There is a multiple choice part of the exam in class and then a take-home (open-note) part of the exam. Do the homework!!! It is so helpful for the exams and practicing graphing. His lectures and homework are very similar to the exams!! The hardest part for me was the final (which I'm pretty sure I almost failed), but I still got an A in the class! My discussion wasn't mandatory (thank goodness because I had a 9:00 am on Fridays), and I only went to my discussion before exams which was helpful to go over the practice exam questions.
experience: I enjoy math, a lot. was undecided about my major. transferred in after the drop deadline, told by Santugini I couldn't make up any assignments. he informed me of the dutch knockout.
didn't go to lecture or disc. at all. only showed up for the tests, and the final.
I read lecture slides without lecture context, not very helpful. ended up having to binge santugini homework and discussion quiz solutions days prior to final. did the dutch knockout, ended with a B- (grade on final exam was used as my final grade.)
overall: enthusiastic prof. a good amount of assignments with arbitrary deadlines imo tho. major annoyance is that there was no course textbook. should be easy if you're good at math and/or pay attention in lecture. if anybody gets arrogant tho or falls behind, keep working, you can do it. the final is not completely an easy A, nor absolutely miserable. just don't get TOO cocky!
our class average for the final was a B.
Professor Santugini really cares about his students and making sure they understand concepts and things taught during lectures. Some say that he incorporates too much math into his course; however, I think that it was fine and it's all basic algebra that you will need to understand to complete classwork. He tries his best to respond to everyone and help everyone outside of class time in order to explain any questions. His midterms were very fair and the final was also fair. Overall, if you study for the midterms and finals very well you should get an A in the class. Another thing is, complete all the homework assignments and post-lecture quizzes because those points add up. Overall, great professor and the class was well taught.
I took this class as a pre-req for comm school and professor santugini was amazing!! It is very clear that he is passionate about what he teaches and he provides many resources in and out of class. The material is not too difficult but requires work to be put in. I struggled in the beginning of the year but the professor was very helpful during office hours and I ended up with a B+
