Kevin Janes is guaranteed the 2nd coming of Galileo - truly a renaissance man in our modern times. He starts the class by showing you a video of him fighting crime and tearing up the ghettos of Baltimore as a young undergraduate student. During the semester, he proceeds to amaze you with his secondary and tertiary structure, unveiling the inner complexity of his succulent personality. For there is nary a question he doesn't know the answer and nary a blue term that doesn't show up on the exams. This course is impeccably crafted by the Vitamin water drinking, open bar loving, intermittent fasting zen master himself - he who welcomes you into his pre-lecture, never fails to give you 2 more minutes and always, always sees you in class. May you all be blessed to have Kevin Janes grace your souls. Peace be with you.
Dr. Janes is one of the smartest professors at U.Va. I would constantly ask him questions and not one of them was out of his scope. He values dedication and hard work and if you consistently put in the effort he will put in the effort to help get the grade you want. Do not put off the paper as it can make or break your grade. Start early, ask for help, and have fun!
One of my favorite courses at UVA. There is no textbook -everything that is tested is based on the recorded pre-lecture and lecture. And there is a LOT of material. Recommend printing out each lecture's slides to write on. Opinion paper took a very long time, and felt more tedious than learning, but paid off in the end. Janes is extremely brilliant when it comes to cell biology - and values hard work. He rounded up several grades at the end of the semester. Overall, a very information dense yet structured course that is taught in a way that doesn't make it seem so bad.
A uniquely structured and thrilling course.
Janes keeps the adrenaline alive with multiple-choice only (and like 5 total numerically answered questions) quizzes + tests that you receive feedback on immediately (via QuestionPress). The lectures are succinct and very organized. Then, there's the opinion paper, which IMO is an awesome + creative assignment. One of the brightest and wittiest people I've ever met. Go to office hours; he'll remember you if you go regularly. He also tells pretty funny jokes if you can catch them...
Janes is one of the smartest guys you'll meet, and it'll show soon. As a professor he's as knowledgeable as it gets.
Be careful not to fall behind on the material because it is dense and long.
Tip: Try taking notes and bringing in pictures on a computer note-taking program like Evernote, etc. It'll help keep it clean and you can go back and edit it later since the lectures are very fast paced.
