This class is NOT easy! The lectures are mind-numbingly boring, Garrett purposely leaves part of the notes out so when you do go to class, you spend the whole time trying to "fill in the blanks" instead of listening to him, and the sample quizzes? Forget them! They're pointless. Out of 50 sample questions, he might take 2 at the most for the real quiz. His policy is that if you have an "A" average on 5 out of the 7, you're exempt from the final. Well to see how likely that is, let me tell you how many were exempt from my class: 48 out of 495! If you need to take a science, I advise you: do NOT take this class!
Although this is not a "gut" class anymore, if you are genuinely interested in science - namely chemistry, biology and the science behind nutrition this class is definitely worthwhile. I enjoyed every lecture, was challenged on tests, and in the end felt I learned more from this class than any others in my 4 years at UVA. Not only does he explore the chemistry of nutrition, but also keeps you informed of some of the most recent findings in nutrition. Excellent class!
This class is a breeze and is indeed "still" a gut course; he gives you lecture notes, drops 2 quizzes, even holds several review sessions before every quiz just in case you forgot the difference between carbs, fats, and proteins. Prof Garrett is the man, too. If you think this class is hard, then you probably shouldn't be at UVa.
This is not an easy class. You should go to every class, read the text thoroughly and review the notes as if you were taking an exam even though evaluations are called "quizzes". Garrett is old-school, a stickler for the rules and few freebies. That said, if you are interested in health or nutrition, the class is VERY informative and you will guaranteed know more than your friends. It is worth taking, just be prepared to study some Biology and Chemistry along the way.
Don't let the 106 bias you-this class is work. Weekly quizzes are multiple choice and are very detail oriented. Paying attention in class is hard but necessary-the notes he post online are not complete and he runs through the complete ones pretty fast. Info is cool you learn a lot, but can be boring esp if you don't love the info as much as the prof.
Professor Garrett is a really nice teacher, however don't be fooled that the final is just past exams altogether. While there might be a few from the past, be prepared to study the sample exams and the notes. Lecture notes are the key to success, come to class, go to the review, and you'll be guaranteed success. Good luck
