This class is terrible. It is structured in a moronic way that doesn't allow you to plan things out. Vaguely tells you to read books and chapters of this art book without any definite plan as to what you're actually doing. Probably the loftiest teacher I've ever had in my life who plans the class as he goes - you honestly never know what your grade is going to be and in my opinion, he grades unfairly.
I don't understand all the negative comments below. As far as I'm concerned, this class was absolutely fantastic!! Barolsky is truly interested in the stuff he covers in the class and he cares about his students alot.
Your grade is based on mid-term, final (both of which are 15 minutes long, no kidding), 2 page paper, and journal. Journal (basically, after every lecture you pick an artwork and write about it) is a big hassle and time-consuming, but it definitely improves your writing skill. You hardly need to read the textbook but it is absolutely vital that you go to every lecture and take good notes. You will find nowhere in the textbook the answers for the some of the questions he ask in the exams.
The bottom line is that this is the art history class with the minimum amount of memorization (I only memorized 60 artworks for the final). And after taking this class, you will be able to go to museum and talk about the artworks intelligently.
Oh make sure to drink coffee before each class...
He is awesome teacher. He seems to know everything know about Renaissance stuff. He cited many many exterior materials, and they show up on exams, so you definitely should go to class and do decent notetaking. Exams are straight from lectures and actually you don't need to read textbook but should read supplementary book which comes up at the exam. Don't procrastinate journals, if you do you will be stressed out to write 40 journals at the final exam period. Two exams, one two-page paper, fianl journal (2 half page paragraph for each week, and you will submit them at the end of semester)
