This review is for STAT 3130. First couple days of class she seems nice and she made it seem that if you study and do the homework you could pull out an A. Turns out she is terrible at teaching so by the end of the year barely anyone would show up to class. She is incredibly awkward in office hours and did not help at all when I had homework questions. Also, she barely did any practice problems in class and the homework was mainly over a computer program (SAS) so it didn't help you learn the material that was going to be covered on the tests. This class is the reason I'm dropping the stat major. Do not take this class or any class with Tomas.
Writing this for the first time she taught this course. You learn R and SAS. You have to. Lectures are pretty boring. It's hard to pay attention in a coding class when it's just the professor talking about the code she did. Most of your grade is in Labs(HW) and group projects. You do group coding projects (one for R, one for SAS) where you have to go through a bunch of techniques and work through the data. The final is individual where you do parts in R and SAS and for some you get to choose. I never got a good feel for how she graded the projects, but I sure learned a bunch by having to do them. Overall, I hope she has improved her lecturing but kept the projects for actual experience to learn the code.
This course was very helpful for learning how to clean up real-world datasets (which is something you don't get in any other Statistics course at UVA). Amber Tomas is a good/straightforward lecturer and is very helpful with questions about homework or the course material in general. This class is super easy.
