The assignments are simple and easy to do, but the exams are very different. Not to mention this semester was Rebecca's first year teaching at the university--you could tell. Not only was she all over the place, there was just a large disconnect between her and the students. Some things she says/facial expressions she makes are distracting and sometimes rude. We would just go through the slides and maybe do a practice problem or two at the end of class. I'm sure I would've done so much better with Maria, go with her if you can. Every time she was in the lab (which is pointless and a waste of time and energy for all parties involved) she actually explained things. The concepts aren't that difficult, she just doesn't convey them well.
Rebecca is good one on one but she is not a good lecturer. I would recommend Maria. Rebecca only reads directly off the slides which are disjointed and lack explanation. There are no curves and no rounding in the class. The lab is completely pointless. Their system of returning work is mind-bogglingly counterintuitive- they make you go to their office and sift through piles of hundreds of papers to find your scantron, multiple choice packet, and free response packet. As someone with no background in statistics the course was a bit difficult for me. Her mannerisms can come off as rude but I do not think she means it, she seems like a nice person who cares about the subject.
Do not take this course if you don't have to. Not worth your time.
I absolutely love Rebecca. She's not that great at explaining in class what she means, but she's very genuine and will answer your questions earnestly. HER OFFICE HOURS ARE GOLDEN. If you're having trouble at all, she'll help you out SO much in Office Hours. She's very sweet and loves statistics, and she's gotten a lot better about doing practice problems while going through the notes. I would recommend her over Maria just because if you ever have a problem Rebecca has definitely got your back.
Rebecca is a great professor! Some of the reviews suggest otherwise, but I think she has really gotten into the groove of teaching. Coming from a student who got an A, here are a few tips: 1) Read the textbook readings before class so that you have an idea of what is going on, but don't worry about them when studying for the exams. 2) DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS ON WEB ASSIGN. I didn't know they existed until too late in the semester. 3) Work on labs during the lab period as the T.A. goes over what to do, and ask questions in office hours! 4) When studying for the exams, focus on the practice exams and practice problems, but also make sure that you understand the concepts of all of the topics- the multiple choice questions are very conceptual!
I recommend this class. Rebecca has practice exams for each exam and they're very similar to the actual exams, so as long as you know how the stuff on the practice exams, you'll do fine on the real exams. The lecture is pretty boring and lab is pointless, but overall it isn't much work and fairly easy, so I recommend taking it.
Kind of difficult course if you have no prior stat experience. Labs are completely pointless and grading can sometimes be a little harsh- key is to go to lab office hours before each lab is due and you will basically be guaranteed a 100 on all the labs. Exams can be pretty difficult even with a lot of studying. Didn't open the textbook once seriously don't waste your money on it. Rebecca often makes mistakes on her powerpoints and practice exams with her math, so make sure to double check that she has the right answers if you think she's wrong. Overall, don't take unless you have to.
Pretty good stats course although I wasn't a fan of the Lab component and coding, but I suggest going to the TA office hours for help if you are stuck because they will save you so much time. Hehn is great. I don't really know why people complain to be honest. Don't really need to do the readings at all. I'd recommend to stay away from buying the textbook so you can save yourself some money. The exams are pretty similar to the practice exams, so if you do good on those, you will be in good shape for the exams.
I was very inspired by Hehn's love for statistics, and ironically although I thought the class its self was boring, I fell in love with the material and decided to major in Biostatistics. Since the material was pretty easy it felt like we spent too much time on too little content, if that makes sense. I loved Rebecca as a person, less as a teacher.
