Love this professor!! Super accommodating and it is apparent he truly cares about his student's well being. He gives us wellness breaks and classes go super fast because his presentations are engaging and have a lot of group work. Spanish isn't my favorite subject, but I would 100% say that this is my favorite Spanish professor I've had at UVA!!
Prof. Flórez Murillo is truly such a caring and enthusiastic instructor. He wants you to succeed and will work with you to make sure that you have ample opportunities to show your growth as a Spanish learner. Not only that, but he cares about each student as a whole person and not just another person to teach some Spanish to. I have had good experiences with all of my Spanish professors at UVA but Profe Flórez Murillo really goes above and beyond!
Every student in the college has to take a language, and because it's required, its often not enjoyable. But what I can tell you is that when you have to take this course, you should take it with Florez-Murillo. He's kind, attentive, available to help, and wants you to ask questions. He 100% wants you to succeed, and if you articulate what's going on/wrong, he will be available to help you. The class is flipped, and there is A LOT OF TALKING/GROUP WORK IN THE CLASS. Expect the homework to feel overwhelming in the beginning, definitely more than your other classes. But as it goes on, the homework becomes less strenuous. This class is made for you to pass. My recommendation is to make sure you prepare for the quizzes (they are only 10 questions) and the first two tests so that by the final exam you don't have to cram. The homework piles up fast: don't get behind. You also should be getting 100s on every homework by using the "check your work" feature on connect, which is unlimited. Given that you're getting 99-100% on all homework, you should be fine. He is also an easy grader. Overall, it was a good Spanish class. The grade split is as follows:
Final Project: 15%
Final Exam: 10%
Exam Average (there are 2): 10%
Participation: 10%
Quizzes (4-5 of them): 10%
Connect: 10%
Redacciones (Writing): 20%
Interactions (filmed talking): 10%
ePortolio Assignments (Writing): 5%

SPAN 2020 has a reputation of being a pretty hard class, but this one is not so bad. If you just do all the homeworks and required assignments on time you should be alright. The entire class is group work and participation, so be prepared for that. It's an easy A- if you perform well on the quizzes/exams but relatively tough to get an A as you need the 95%+. Overall, Professor Murillo is very friendly and I highly recommend this professor to anyone who needs to take SPAN 2020.
If you need to fulfill your Spanish language requirement, I highly recommend taking it with Professor Florez! He was very patient with my classmates and I which is key especially for language learning. Basically before every class we would have readings which weren't very long and new vocabulary to learn and then homework assignments which checked our understanding. The assignments could take some time but honestly I rarely did the readings and found it pretty easy to self-learn through the homework assignments. Plus, for the ones on connect, you usually get three submissions and after the first one it will tell you all the correct answers so you are pretty much guaranteed a 100% on your second submission. As for the tests and quizzes, he gives so many study materials such as practice quizzes and exams which are almost the exact same format as the actual quizzes and exams. There are also two graded discussions in class which you prepare for before class but as long as you are engaged and use relevant vocabulary/grammar structures, I found it easy to score 100% on both of those. Overall, this class can be difficult, but this professor made it so much easier and I felt like I learned a lot especially compared to my high school Spanish courses.
