I thoroughly enjoyed SPAN 1060. I was lucky enough to have it with Profesora Diaz, who was an amazing instructor. She made class time fun, interesting, and engaging. We were told that this course is the most information-intensive of the other Spanish courses, however the work is VERY manageable. The main types of homework include: reading/note-taking on the next chapter (due to it being flipped-classroom), Connect assignments (pretty easy), and e-Portfolio activities. Although I had a B+ in the class, I could've easily had an A- had I'd studied more for the 4 exams and the Final (so make sure you do that if you take this course!). I would 10/10 recommend this course if you'd like to know more about the Spanish language, culture, or just need to fill that FL requirement. I would also 11/10 recommend taking this course with Diaz!
Professor specifics about Thallya: Amazing teacher. Thallya’s a grad student here at UVa, and she does a really good job with the sections of SPAN 1060 she teaches. She always has interesting activities to practice in class (e.g., pictionary, heads up, jeopardy, videos, conversations) and is very approachable. She knows this class is a lot of material, and she will prep you as much as possible for each exam by giving you *very helpful* advice on what to study. She is constantly reminding you of deadlines to make sure you don’t forget anything, and she grades generously whenever possible.
Class specifics about SPAN 1060: This course is structured where you learn grammar and vocab on your own at home, and class time is used just to practice. It is extremely fast paced--sort of a crash course introduction to all of Spanish in a single semester. But because of that, you really do learn a ton of Spanish quite quickly. I had never taken a Spanish class at all before this and I ended up with an A, almost an A+ (mostly due to Thallya’s grading, though). Attendance is taken every day and you can only miss 3 days all semester.
