I came into the class with only some Spanish from 10th grade and ended up doing very well. If you have never taken Spanish before, this course is definitely doable, but it is going to take a lot of time. Professor Young is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Anything you are confused about, she will explain in detail until you are comfortable with the concept. The exams weren't bad, and the other projects/small assignments really help your grade as well! Definitely recommend taking this course with Young!!
Professor Young is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. She is very understanding and she takes pride in teaching the material. We would go through the material very fast, but she would always be available to excellently explain a concept. If you are having trouble with a concept, she always takes the time to explain it and nail the concept until you have it down. She also explains all of the assignments in detail and how everything is graded.
I loved Professor Young! She was so engaging and had lots of energy. She very obviously cared about her students and really wanted each of us to fully understand the content. She took care to make sure we all were engaged. I am not good at Spanish and was nervous for the class. Professor Young made this very manageable and was so understanding. Though the department makes this class adhere to a strict syllabus, she does as much as she can to help her students. She is generous with her time and very sharp as well. Highly recommend Professor Young.
This course was perfect for me. Professor Young is very enthusiastic about teaching Spanish and puts a lot of effort into making the class both fun and informative. At the beginning, there is a lot of homework, but it starts to level out as the semester goes along. The course goes over the topics in a very easy to understand manner. This course peaked my interest in Spanish because of the way it was both taught and organized.
Professor Young is, hands down, the best professor! If I could have given her six stars, I would! She is extremely knowledgeable and an exceptionally great teacher as well!
The class itself is a lot of work but it is 4 credits so that is to be expected (but that is true for all SPAN 1060 classes - same amount of work for each of them regardless of the professor). As far as grading goes, Professor Young is very fair and an extremely fast grader! It is honestly truly amazing how fast she can grade. If you take this class with her, you will never worry about where your grade stands as it is constantly updated.
Moreover, Professor Young does a great job of giving her students all the resources that they need to succeed. For example, she has a tutoring program that, this semester, was held every week on Mondays. This is an extremely useful and well-designed program that offers support to students. I went to this program almost every week and had a great experience every single time.
You need at least a 95.50% to get an A in this class (again, not Professor Young's policy but the Spanish department's). While this is a high benchmark to achieve, it is not impossible to do. In fact, asking good, relevant questions and staying on top of the work are fundamental necessities to achieve an A in the class.
As mentioned before, taking this course with Professor Young may be the best decision you make for next semester - great class with an even better professor!
Profesora Young was by far the best Spanish professor I've ever had. Spanish has always been the subject that simply doesn't click for me. I took it for several years across middle and high school and just never saw myself enjoying/excelling in it. Profesora Young changed that! She was always available to provide extra help, routinely sent follow-up emails after class to clear up concepts that I individually struggled with, and, best of all, had crazy short turnaround times with assignments. I would take every Spanish class with Profesora Young if I could! Can't recommend her enough.
One of the best instructors I have had at this University. She works hard to know each of her students further than just surface level. There is a lot of work in this course, but Professor Young does her best to make it manageable for her students. I was taking 18 credits this semester and I had no trouble turning stuff in on time to her. Also, she grades very reasonably. Overall, she is a wonderful instructor and does a wonderful job teaching the actual course materials. I always felt prepared just by what we had done in class. She also gives any extra resources that you ask her for. Hands down, you need to take this class with Professor Young!
The professor is so understanding and nice. The class seems daunting at first, and there is a lot of work no doubt, but Profesora Young makes sure you have the best time. She is very approachable and doesn't lie to you as a student. She is very goofy and enthusiastic about teaching Spanish. As long as you keep up with the due dates you will be fine. I didn't do any studying outside of doing the assigned homeworks and I ended up with a solid A. You can tell Profesora Young cares about each one of her students, and really makes sure that the class feels like a community. I entered the class knowing no one and now I have some of my closest friends thanks to her.
This review is based on the professor, not the class-- my ratings would be wayyyy lower if I was talking about the class and not the instructor b/c the class itself is just a ton of busy work. Professor Young was an awesome professor!! She prepared very engaging classes and graded every assignment the day we turned it in-- even the final! The class itself is standardized and the workload is annoying, but having a professor that cared made it much more enjoyable. If I could, I would take every Spanish class here with her. If you have the chance, def enroll with Professor Young.
Professor Young was one of the best professors I’ve ever had! She always gave great feedback and was available to help outside of class whenever I needed! The workload of Span 1060 is heavy because it’s 4 credits but it’s definitely manageable. They give you 3 tokens to use if you miss assignments and deadlines which is so helpful. As long as you do the assignments, it’s pretty easy to get an A. There are 4 exams total and they count the same as the projects which are super easy. The classroom practice is what helps the most with learning, Professor Young is great at explaining all of the concepts. There is also free Spanish tutoring available for students which is helpful!
This was the best class I took this semester and Prof. Young really made this class enjoyable. I hated Spanish before this, and she really changed my attitude about the language! There's a lot of work in this class, but I felt that my Spanish improved drastically since the start of the semester. This class is an easy A-, and getting an A is harder than it should be, but that isn't her fault since the course is standardized throughout 1060. If you need to fulfill a requirement, Prof. Young is the best to take it with!
I chose this class because of Professor Young's reviews from previous semesters. I can confidently say that being in her class made me actually enjoy spanish and coming to class. Professor Young tries to make class time as fun as possible through group activity and allowing us to converse during class. I never felt like I was being lectured at, which is great because I hate lecture style teaching. Even though I took this class because it's required in the CAS, i actually really enjoyed this class. Professor Young is one of the few teachers that I will actually keep in tough with in the future. She's really nice and funny as well, which helps with the energy in the classroom. For the class in general, the work is relatively easy. Just keep up with the contraseña assignments (it'll actually help with your grade at the end of the semester). Also, make sure to do well in your projects, they make up a significant amount of your grade. The only downside of this class is that the grading scale is a little outlandish. You need a 95.5% (they round up!) or technically a 96% to get an A. It is really easy to get at least an A- in the class though. Overall, I really recommend Professor Young for span 1060.
Professor Young was an absolutely amazing professor and I really believe her work is what made this class so enjoyable and the content so easy to learn. Even though there was a lot of work to be done in the class and there was a significant amount of content to be covered in such a short time, the energy she brought to the classroom, the feedback she gave. the speed of her grading, and all of the materials she provided made the class so much easier and much more digestable. Compared to my peer's experience with other professors in 1060, I very highly recommend taking your 1060 course with Professor Young!! Amazing class and professor :]
It’s hard to be a better Spanish professor than Professor Young. She made every class enjoyable with her vibrant energy and interactive style of teaching. The course is structured as a flipped classroom, so lessons are taught online and practiced in class, which works well for a course like SPAN 1060 with a lot of content. In class, was a lot to go through in a little bit of time, but Professor Young made the time fly by. In group work, she always made an effort to come to each table and give feedback and praise. She’s the best!
Professor Young is one of the best professors I have had at UVA. She is incredibly nice and often will go above beyond for her students. The class has " a lot " of work, but if you know spanish it is a breeze. The contraseña is sometimes a bit much but she will work with you on that if you need it. She is an extremely quick grader and email responder. Grades are more then usually posted the same day as it is due. The final was not bad, and she had that grades within a few hours. She is very upfront with deadlines and it is almost impossible to forget to do assignments because she emails at least twice a day. It is not hard to get an A even with the strange language requirement of a 96 an up. Do the work when it's due, pay attention in class, and study for the exams, and you should be fine. Overall, if you need to fulfil the language requirement and are looking for a phenomenal teacher, look for Professor Young.
I absolutely love Professor Young! You can tell that she really wants you to do well and is willing to meet with you outside of class if you ask her. She really cares about all of her students and wants them to do well. She is the most understanding professor that I have ever had. The class is really fast paced so it is important to stay up to date on homework and vocabulary to follow along in class and do well. It is a lot of work but it is doable as long as you don't get behind. All of the spanish classes are the same amount of work so I would definitely take it with Professor Young! She also grades assignments very fast which is a plus.
I had Professor Young for this class, and she was amazing! She always fought for her students by trying to give us extensions or make the tests more fair. Unfortunately, the way the class is run isn't up to her; rather, all SPAN 1060 students have the same homework and tests decided by the department as a whole. That being said, if you need to take Spanish as a requirement, I would highly recommend Professor Young. One of my favorite things about her was how much she cared about her students' wellbeings and depths of learning. If I ever had a question about something I was confused about, she would research it and email me an article better explaining the answer to my question after class. Also, after the first test, she sent me a personalized email congratulating me for my score. I never imagined a professor in college being so personal with her students and caring about them as much as she does. Although the work in this class can sometimes get tedious and redundant, taking it my first semester in college has truly been a positive experience. If you've taken more than two years of Spanish in high school, you will do just fine in this class. #tCFfall2021
Prof. Young is an amazing professor! She is very approachable, encouraging, and enthusiastic! She always makes sure to remind about upcoming assignments and homework which is super helpful. Overall, she makes learning Spanish very fun and is always willing to help. I would highly recommend taking this course with her! :)
I came into this course with very little Spanish knowledge, but to my surprise I ended up loving it! In this class there are online assignments due almost every day, so there is a fair amount of work. However, the assignments are not very difficult, just tedious, and they really do help you learn/practice the material.
I highly recommend taking the class with Profesora Young, as it is evident that she wants her students to learn properly and succeed. She's lenient, as long as she sees that you put in the work, and she prepares you well for all of the projects and exams. She also won't call on you randomly in class, like some of the other professors! (Class participation is a part of your grade though..) She created such a warm, welcoming, and encouraging environment this semester. I recommend studying a little bit every day if you don't have much Spanish background, and you'll be more than fine!
Professor Young was the nicest professor I had all semester. She was always so passionate to teach the material and she cared a lot about the success of her students. The class itself is good amount lot of work, but it's all manageable in terms of difficulty. There are a ton of assignments in the first one or two weeks but don't let that scare you away from the class. Overall, if you manage your time well, SPAN 1060 will be a good experience with Professor Young.
Professor Young is an incredibly passionate and understanding instructor. Through her flexibility, positivity, and eagerness to assist students it is clear she wants her students to succeed. Professor Young was inclusive and encouraging to students at all language levels which made learning a new language far less intimidating. I would 100% recommend taking SPAN 1060 with her if you are able to.
Professor Young is definitely the best teacher to have for SPAN 1060! She explains difficult grammar concepts so well, offers a ton of extra practice, responds quickly to emails, grades assignments quickly, and is overall an amazing teacher to have. Since the course is basically a combination of 1010 and 1020 in one sem, there's a lot of work. However, when there were too many assignments due at once, we were given extensions to make it a little easier. As long as you put in a little effort for your projects and stay on top of assignments, you shouldn't struggle too much. If you do ever feel like you need help, Professor Young is so nice and very easy to reach out too <3 She always checked in with us to see how we were doing during class, and if she noticed that there was a lot of confusion, she would email us extra practice. #tCFfall2021
Professor Young is a great professor and she is the best professor I had this semester. She really cares about her students and she is very accommodating when people need help. She is great about answering questions and always stops to make sure people understand the concepts she is going over. Professor Young is really good about replying quickly to emails as well if you have any questions. The class moves fast, but she gives you so many resources to help you succeed in class and over email. This course material is the same across SPAN 1060, and there can be a decent amount of textbook activities. However, there were several times we got extensions when projects were really close together so that took the stress off as well. You should definitely take this class with Professor Young, she is a really fast grader and this class was one of the few I had where I always knew my grade. The exams were never too challenging as long as you studied a couple days before, but I do recommend taking the time to learn the vocabulary because that can come back to bite you. If you are a first-year it is really great to have a professor that knows you and wants you to do well so don't miss out. #tCFfall2021
The 1060 course itself is definitely a lot of work and requires time management. The homework assignments/projects and other due dates are the same across all of the courses, so choosing a good instructor will help the course to be enjoyable. Professor Young is one of the nicest and most understanding professors I have had at UVA. She makes class time fun and is very outgoing!! Going to her office hours/tutoring is very helpful as well. If you are considering taking SPAN 1060, I 10/10 recommend taking it with Prof. Young!!!
There is a reason this course is four credits, it moves quickly and covers a LOT of vocabulary and grammar! Sometimes, it can feel like a lot of busy work (course work may look different in person though). However, Professor Young makes this course super enjoyable. She is energetic, kind, and understanding. She is also a very fast grader. I highly recommend taking SPAN 1060 with Professor Young!
Professor Young is the best! She is always so enthusiastic in class and will help with any concepts you have trouble understanding. Even over zoom, she is able to keep everyone engaged and keep the class interesting. Class (over zoom at least) consists of going into break out rooms with a partner and going through different activities (talking, filling in blanks, conjugating, etc). These activities in class are really easy if you keep up with work on Contraseña. Outside of class, you learn the whole curriculum on Contraseña. I think it's a good site that teaches concepts well and provides a TON of practice problems. The work on Contraseña can get very repetitive but it's really not that bad. The exams are pretty easy if you put in the time to study a little bit. This class is accelerated and there are a lot of concepts to cover, but none are that hard to learn. On top of that, Prof Young provides a lot of resources to make sure you can succeed in the class (tutoring, extra practice links sent via email, etc). A big part of the grade is the unit projects, and they're all really easy as long as you follow what the directions are. Some projects take longer than others, but it's a minimal amount of work for how much they affect the grade, so make sure you do them. Overall, Prof Young is the best professor ever and I would 100% recommend this class to anyone wanting to take Span 1060!
I love love love Professor Young! She is very personable, understanding, and answers all student questions. She is so encouraging and genuinely cares about student success and will do whatever it takes to help them get there. She has high expectations for her students, but she is a fair grader and is always going above and beyond to help her students. Probably one of the best teachers I've ever had period.
Professor Young is THE professor to take 1060 with. She is super nice and super helpful and always very upbeat. If you have taken Spanish before this class should be a breeze, especially the first half. If you have not taken Spanish, this can be very difficult. Professor Young is very chill about grading. As long as you show that you have put in effort, you will get 100's on most assignments. You don't have to have flawless Spanish, she is mostly just looking for improvement and dedication. Tests are generally pretty easy. Just review the big grammar concepts and the vocab. Major key to get her to like you is to literally volunteer to answer questions as often as possible. She loves the students who constantly answer questions whether they are right or not. The 96 for an A standard seems daunting, but many assignments are basically participating, only about 50-60% of your grade is real assessment. Also, after your second try on connect hw, you can see the correct answers so don't fret about being perfect on those. Lot's of HW each week which is all easy but slightly annoying. Overall, 100% recommend taking this with Professor Young, but I have heard that all the 1060 professors are very good too.
Professor Sara Young is one of the most energetic and engaging professors I've had at UVA! In the beginning, I was kind of upset I had to take Spanish again because I didn't place out on the foreign language exam, but my experience with this class, my classmates, and Professor Young couldn't have been any better! Professor Young always explains everything concisely and thoroughly and she will always answer everyone's questions. When I or other students make mistakes in her class, she will correct us in a very kind way so we can learn from our mistakes. I'm never afraid to raise my hand in her class because I'm not afraid to make mistakes in her class. I know with some of my other classes, I'll won't want to raise my hand unless I know I have the correct answer. The class can be a lot of work, but the work is never too difficult. As long as you keep up with work and review the vocabulary over time and take notes on the grammar tenses, you will succeed in this class. Overall, this is a great course and if you can, try to get Professor Sara Young!
Professor Young is one of the most energetic professors I've ever had at UVA. I first walked into her class having had 0 Spanish experience whatsoever and I was nervous about the class. However, Professor Young's attitude, along with the flipped classroom way of teaching Spanish helped me grasp the language so well, and I came out at the end of the semester being confident in my ability to speak some Spanish. She was constantly motivating as a professor, and made herself available to her students as much as possible, whether it was office hours or her quick responses to emails. I would recommend her as a Spanish professor to anyone who is taking the class.
In this course Professor Young quickly vaulted into being one of the best teachers I have ever had and by far my favorite foreign language professor. The very beginning of the semester can be a bit overwhelming simply because of the fast-pace nature of the class but trust me once you figure out how to stay on top of work and get assignments done efficiently the course is extremely manageable and becomes very enjoyable. I found this to be true even as I took 17 credits. Professor Young keeps the time spent in class focused and productive and is a very fair and straightforward grader. On that note, she grades faster than any professor I have ever had and is very comprehensive in what areas to improve on. She was always willing to help any individual outside of class and provides every resource you need for success. This course may require more involvement than any "easy A" class but that is just because the only way to learn a language is through repetition. As someone who struggles with foreign language and had virtually no Spanish experience coming in, I still got an A-. The one downside is that to get an A you must get a 96 or above in the course, but that isn't Professor Young's policy that is Spanish Dept. wide so any SPAN class you take hits you with that. I am sure that other professors are great but if you can definitely take this with Professor Young. My only pieces of advice are don't be lazy (stay on top of the work) and if you are at all struggling with a concept just meet with her or go to the tutoring she provides. In all, highly recommend!!!
This course takes a lot of time (which is why it is 4 credits!). You have nightly homework on an online platform which is almost like a workbook and takes about an hour every night as well as different writing or speaking activities which must be published onto your ePortfolio. There is one mandatory textbook and another grammar book which I didn't even open until studying for the final as well as a dictionary that you must being to class for participation points (I usually only brought the textbook and was fine). This course moves quickly, so class attendence is a necessity (the attendence policy is also VERY strict, so make sure to get a time that you will actually be able to attend). I took this course with Prof. Young and loved it. She has a ton of energy, and has been teaching this course for eight years, so she has the experiece and knowledge of how to get students to understand the material. I had this class when all classes were moved online and her flexibility with the schedule was truly amazing. She is a BIG emailer, which honestly helps with the amount of assignments due nightly-- you can't really forget them because she will email you a reminder. Prof Young wants you to suceed in this class, so ask her for help because she truly wants all her students to do well. She loves people who bring some energy into class with them and participate (and again, participation is a large portion of your grade), so if you are a talker in classes Prof. Young is definitely who you should take this class with.
Profesora Sara Young is hands down the best professor to take Span 1060 with! She is so kind and goes out of her was to help you. The work is not that difficult but there is a lot and if I was ever behind or did a homework incorrectly, she would tell me before the deadline. She explains material very clearly and constantly inquires if anyone has questions. She even created a free tutoring program for students that meets every week! She does everything and beyond to help her students succeed. If you are taking SPAN 1060, TAKE IT WITH SARA YOUNG! The Spanish Department dictates the grading which is 10% for connect hw, 10% for the final, 4 exams that are 30%, quizzes that are 10%, 10% final, oral exam for 10%, 2 research projects for 10%, and Eportfolio for 10%.
Professor Young is the most amazing professor and person! She has so much energy and makes the class fun. The class goes really fast, so the workload is a decent amount. But if you stay caught up and put in the work, your experience will be great! I went to office hours and tutoring almost every week, and Professor Young will do anything in her hands to help her students be as successful as possible. If you have to take Spanish 1060 for your language requirement, I definitely recommend Sara Young! I am so happy to have had her and the student-to-teacher bond we made! I would ALWAYS read the pages from the textbook that were assigned, so that I could participate effectively the next day in class. I did not read the assigned readings one time, and I was very confused the next day. Participation is a big part of the class, and Professor Young LOVES it when you participate.
Sarah Young has been such a blessing in my life! She comes to class with enthusiasm, care and efficiency without fail. She amazes me. She knows the material like the back of her hand but also knows how to teach it. She is willing to work one-on-one with students, has created the tutoring program and listens to feedback! When I was injured in a bike accident, she supported me, prayed for me, helped me with everything I needed and even got me a gift. Take Span 1060 with Professor Young. You won't regret it.
My favorite professor and class I have ever had! She brings an amazing energy into the classroom and is really helpful when you do not understand a concept. She also makes herself easily available if you are not comfortable asking questions in class and encourages you to come talk to her outside of the classroom. The workload is easily manageable but still makes you learn a lot while having fun.
Really fun professor- she makes learning the language fun even though the course does have some challenging concepts. What I really liked was that she was really active with emails and sent an email at the start of the week with an outline of the assignments due that week, which made it easier to remember what was due when. Totally recommend taking 1060 with her.
Professor Young is the best Spanish teacher I've had at UVA. This course covers a lot of information and can be overwhelming but she presents all of the content in a clear, organized format. She's helpful and understanding and was always willing to meet with me outside of class. If you put in the time, you will definitely do well in this class. If you need to enroll in Spanish 1060, make sure Professor Young is your teacher!
This class was so helpful in helping me with my Spanish. Although this course covered a large amount of material, Professor Young was great at making the class engaging and at using different techniques to teach the material. It is obvious that she has a strong desire for her students to know the Spanish language well and is enthusiastic during class. She prepared us well for tests and was available outside of class if you needed extra help. All-in-all this class was very rewarding and Professor Young made it a fun class to be in. If you can take this course with her I would highly encourage that you do!
Professor Young is a really fun and engaging teacher. 1060 is a challenging course only in that it's an immense amount of work. It's basically a review of the Spanish you learned all through middle and high school in one semester. Professor Young makes going to class worthwhile -- you'll never feel like a minute of class was wasted with pointless work. 1060 really requires a good professor since it's the foundation of the Spanish you'll take for the rest of your time at UVA and Professor Young does a good job making the heaps of work bearable. Also, she'll respond to your email within an hour or two usually but definitely within 24 hours and she's always open to working with you outside of class.
Professor Young is absolutely wonderful! She is super organized which helps the class move efficiently. But she is also very kind and fun as well! She is one of my favorite professors at UVA and someone I can go back to years later when I need help with anything at all. She develops wonderful relationships with her students and creates a fast-paced learning atmosphere that gets students excited to learn. While taking language classes aren't always ideal, her class was always fun to go because she provided engaging activities for her students.
Professor Young is a wonderful professor. While her energy and fast paced teaching can seem intimating on the first day of class she ends up making the 50 minutes feel like 10. The 4 credit SPAN 1060 course can be extremely tedious at times as it is full of busywork, but with Professor Young and her passion for her students, her work and Spanish, I loved every second of the class!!
SPAN 1060 is a perfect course for someone who either learns languages with ease or merely needs to brush up on old skills. Professor Young is perhaps my favorite professor at the University thus far in my college career. Not only does she actively communicate with her students in and out of the classroom, but she also genuinely cares about her students. Language is a subject in which people learn at different rates, and Professor Young understood that. She constantly engaged students in the target language as well as fostered use of the language among peers through group work and in-class activities. As I mentioned earlier, the course is ACCELERATED Elementary Spanish, meaning the course moves at a somewhat quick pace. Because of this, I would probably recommend that a student who already has a prior knowledge of the Spanish language take this course. While there was a lot of work for this class, in the form of reading, writings, homework practice, projects, etc., the work is not by any means unmanageable. I would strongly recommend that anyone with a basic Spanish background who is trying to fulfill SPAN 1010 and 1020 credits take Professor Young's class.
Professor Young did an incredible job with this course. Despite the strict department policies that apply to Spanish 1060--making it difficult at times--she worked really hard to make the class accessible and fun with her great enthusiasm. Although I was nervous coming in, Professor Young was very patient and was always available to clarify concepts during class or in her office hours. As a result, I really enjoyed this course and did much better than I thought I would thanks to her.
Taking SPAN 1060 with Professor Young made the class so enjoyable! She has a lot of energy and it encourages the class to get engaged, which makes it better for everybody. If you have to take this class, I would definitely consider taking it with Professor Young. The Spanish department has policies for each class that the teachers don't have control over, like the amount of homework and tests, so while the class is challenging and a lot of work, Professor Young understands that and does everything in her power to still make it a fun class where you learn a lot. The key to mastering SPAN 1060 is to PARTICIPATE! Professor Young does not make you feel stupid if you say or pronounce something incorrectly, she nicely corrects you so that you learn from your mistakes and don't feel embarrassed. As long as you do what is asked of you in this course you will end up with a good grades.
Professor Young is easily one of the best Spanish instructors I have ever taken a course with. I learned more in 14 weeks with her than in 15 *years* with other instructors (I started in kindergarten). She is always available to offer extra assistance to students, and even holds free tutoring sessions once a week where veteran students (usually Spanish majors/minors) may help out students in 1060. In class, she always had a strong game plan for the day, knew exactly how long each topic would take, and had supplementary activities for us to do after learning the material. She was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dismal New Cabell classroom, and always made an effort to make sure each student was awake and happy. While she always follows department policy, she can be flexible and understanding with non-departmental policies. For instance, I accidentally slept through an exam (as one does) and she let me make it up the next day in her office.
This course has a heavy workload - homework assignments are due almost every night, in addition to longer-term projects. These assignments are immensely helpful when learning new material and the fact that everything can be completed online means you can get stuff done anywhere around Grounds. I never felt like they were too tedious or meaningless. If you find yourself struggling to keep up or stay on top of your work, don't be afraid to talk to her after class or during office hours and get help with planning. Overall, Professor Young is an incredible instructor with a solid course structure, meaningful assignments, and a passion for her students and their ability to succeed in Spanish. I overwhelmingly recommend taking 1060 with her.
Prof. Young is definitely one of the BEST professors at UVA and the BEST Spanish professor I ever had. I strongly recommend taking her class! She is knowledgeable in her area and patient towards her students. Her office hours are extremely helpful, and she replies emails quickly when students have questions. Her grading is fair with good critiques on student's work. SPAN 1060 is a fast-paced class overall and can be quite challenging. However, as long as you stay on top of your homework, readings, and reviews, you should do relatively well in the class! Participation is really important in the class, so make sure to raise your hand and actively participate even if you are not 100% sure that your answer is correct. There are also a lot assignments involving creativity and cultural investigation, which make the assignments fun and rewarding. SPAN 1060 has a lot assessments throughout the course, and Prof. Young's review and tutoring hours can help you prepare. Do not ever hesitate to ask her questions if you are confused; she will teach you the material well and give you other resources to help you practice. You will do well as long as you do your part in this class.
I highly recommend Young, especially for this course because it takes two semesters and combines it into one. The first day of class is overwhelming, as the syllabus is gone over and it seems like there's a ton of work. Young emails you a few weeks before classes start about everything you need to set up to prepare you for the first day so that it doesn't seem so crazy, so if you do everything she emails you about prior to the first day it will seem a lot less crazy. There is usually some type of assignment due everyday, but they don't take a whole lot of time. What I personally did was I did the weeks assignments on a Sunday and was able to get them all done in about an hour and a half/two hours that way I didn't have to worry about assignments at all during the week. The best thing you can do to handle the work load for this course is to do the work ahead of the due date. The format of the course is 4 exams, a final, 3 quizzes I think, e-portfolio work (super important and easy points!!!) and a separate site where the weekly homework is due.
Professor Young is easily the best teacher ive had at this university, she makes the class fun and is ALWAYS willing to work with you and be accommodating. She offers tutoring on Mondays and literally will go out of her way to help her students. You can tell she truly loves what she does and she really wants her students to succeed. If you're guna take SPAN 1060, Young is the teacher for it.
Professor Young makes this class so much fun! She’s always enthusiastic and creates new activities to keep things interesting. She explains the material very clearly and really wants you to succeed. Professor Young really cares about her class and her students, and it shows in how well you’ll end up learning the material. She also has a tutoring program which was super helpful. The homework is a lot, but it’s the same across the department and it’s really not very hard. Also, sometimes she brings her super cute dog to class! Overall, I definitely recommend you take this class with her.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS! Professor Young makes the class really fun, which is great because most people are taking it only for the language requirement. The online homework is time consuming but not at all difficult, and it helps a lot if you do it early. Participation in the class is really important but Professor Young is super nice so I felt like everyone in my class felt totally comfortable participating even if they weren't positive about their answer. I had this class fairly early in the morning and still really enjoyed it and looked forward to it so that says a lot.
TAKE THIS CLASS!! Professor Young has been one of my favorites at UVA. She moves at a fast pace, but you quickly get the hang of it, and the class is honestly quite fun. You'll really learn Spanish and get to know your classmates well through discussion, so don't be afraid of that. I recommend doing the homework in advance because those are easy points and help you learn the material pretty well. Try to raise your hand as much as possible, even if you aren't sure of the answer because participation points really help. Also, go to her tutoring hours because you can both get answers to questions you may have and get to know Prof Young, who is super sweet. Love the class, highly recommend to anyone taking 1060!!
A lot of people enjoyed this class. I did not mind going to class, but towards the end I was not having fun at all. Beginning with the first project it was obvious she showed favoritism in her grading. Then she posted the midterm participation grades and it was obvious again. No matter how hard I tried to participate she would continue calling on her favorites and giving them good grades. This was annoying because it does mess with my grade.
If you take this class, make sure you take it with Professor Young. She is hands down the best professor I've had at UVA. She is always so enthusiastic and genuinely cares about each of her students. She creates a learning environment that is so comfortable and fun and she always goes out of her way to give words of affirmation which is crucial when trying to learn another language. This will probably be the only class I'll ever not mind having on a Friday because Professor Young is so jubilant, even in the morning, and her enthusiasm is contagious. If you work hard in this class, it won't go unnoticed. As for SPAN 1060 in general, the work is the same regardless of the professor you take. There is online homework almost every night, but if you take the time to go through it using the textbook, you'll do enough learning and studying from it to be successful in the class. Your final grade comes from a bunch of different things so make sure you don't blow off any assignments throughout the semester because every point counts and it can be the difference between an A and an A- at the end.
the class is pretty easy if you put in the work. i didn't have any formal spanish experience before this course (i took another foreign language in high school and taking this class for fun), but i'm ending up with an A-. most of your grade is composed of assignments done at home, so even if you don't do as well on the exam, you'll be fine. it is pretty difficult to get an A because of the language grading scale (a 96 for an A), but not impossible if you really try. there are four exams including the final. as long as you memorize the vocab terms and conjugations, you're pretty much guaranteed at least a C. i personally didn't think the connect and eportfolio assignments took too much time, but i also would not recommend procrastinating as the websites themselves can be pretty glitchy at times. it doesn't matter who you take the class with imo because they all have the same assignments and exams, but if you're a morning person i would recommend professor young. she's very enthusiastic and usually updates your grade the day you finish the assignment. if you have any questions, you can ask her after class, during office hours, over email or tutoring. i never went to the free tutoring sessions, but a lot of my classmates did and i would recommend if you're struggling with a particular concept.
Professor Young is absolutely amazing! Her class is by far the best class I have taken since I have been at UVA. She is super upbeat and is really encouraging to all of her students. She creates an environment that allows her students to be comfortable and confident while learning and practicing the language. Her classes are super fun and her energy, even early in the morning, is extremely contagious. Professor Young also offers an incredible amount of resources! Her free Spanish tutoring program is amazing, and if you are having trouble I highly suggest that you go! Furthermore, she is always on top of her grading and returns assignments super efficiently. I have learned so much this semester and feel as if my Spanish has improved immensely. If there is one class and professor that I can recommend at UVA, I would without a doubt recommend SPAN 1060 with Professor Young!
Professor Young is my favorite Spanish teacher I have ever had, and I took 3 years of Spanish in high school so that says a lot! She is always in a good mood and makes class time super fun. I have never seen her not energized and happy for class! Every time I go to class, I am instantly in a better mood. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to do well. Her Spanish tutoring program is amazing, so if you are having trouble in any way - go! However, she is great at teaching & you shouldn't have problems. It is evident Professor Young loves her students, and in return, we love her!! I have never met a single person that has taken her class and HASN'T liked her or her class. She is THE professor to have for this course. All Spanish courses are on the same curriculum, so the amount of classwork / homework is the same for everyone, no matter what professor you have. Therefore, take Professor Young. I cannot stress this enough. She is always on top of her stuff. She is the only professor I have had so far at UVA that inputs grades immediately. She is the best / fastest grader I know, and you are never left wondering what your grade is like for this course. Professor Young also abides by the best schedule, and you know at the VERY beginning of the course what you are doing every day in class, what the homework is for each day, and when tests/quizzes are for the whole semester. You are never left wondering. She even sends emails that REMIND you what to do/how to do things/when to do them. She is also the fastest responder to emails. I wish all professors were like this!!! Every day I go to class, I am excited to see Professor Young. She is warm and very approachable! I feel comfortable in her class, and she is super personable. You won't leave her class feeling like you don't really know her. I love that, because a lot of the time professors feel like strangers. She reminds me of the actress Kristen Bell, and I LOVE that. Happy, fun-loving energy all class, every class. If you keep up with what you need to do as a student as you would for any class, your experience with her will be amazing! The course is not stressful in any way. All the people I know in upper level Spanish courses miss her and her class. I know I will! I am so glad I waited a semester to take this course, so I could take it with her. I can't imagine what it would be like with anyone else. She is my favorite professor ever!!!!!
Professor Young has been one of the best professors I have had in my three years at UVA! She is such a nice person and genuinely cares about her students. She made class so much fun and created an environment where it was okay to make mistakes. Not only is she just a genuinely amazing human being, but she is also such an awesome teacher. She makes it so easy to learn the material and is always available for help if you need it. Also, she is literally the fastest grader I have ever seen and it's incredible. This class is a lot of work and the grading in the language department can be strict, but Prof. Young always makes it clear what she wants from every assignment and I can't even describe how helpful that was. She usually teaches the morning classes but it's worth it trust me! p.s. she brings her dog to class sometimes (need I say more?)
Professor Young was fantastic. She is invested in the progress of her students and provides guidance throughout the entire semester. The tutoring program is great if you do not understand concepts and it is also a great way to get to know her. She is very personable and fun, so I found it easy to get along with her. This was a fast paced course, but it allowed for material to be more interesting in class, because it was centered around group discussion. She is very on top of grading and makes all assignments extremely clear. I fully recommend taking this course with her.
Professor Young is hands-down the best professor I’ve had yet. She is fun and energetic and makes sure to help her students as best as possible. She always has a smile on her face and makes it so her students actually want to participate. Her classroom environment helps me learn Spanish considerably and despite having little skill before the class, I can now confidently converse in basic Spanish with other speakers. She understands the absurd grading for the language department and the workload and although she can’t do anything about either, she does her best to make sure all her students perform to the best of her ability. DO NOT HESITATE TO TALK TO HER. She’s as kind of a friend as well as a professor. For this class in particular, make sure you study for every exam regardless of how easy it seems, as I did poorly on my first exam due to overconfidence and it messed with my grade the entire semester. Being prepared and doing work on time can get you really far with this class where you get a good grade and actually learn Spanish. I never even wanted to not go because it was pretty fun how she structured her class. I highly recommend this class with Prof. Young because you literally can’t get a better experience.
If you want to have fun and laugh in SPAN 1060, Prof. Young is the way to go! She makes class laid back, but we always got a lot of work done. She's super outgoing and reasonable if you work hard in the class. There is a lot of homework, but that is a department policy not Prof. Young specifically. I am now a tutor for Prof. Young's free tutoring program, and enjoy it a lot. Definitely take her class!
I definitely recommend taking SPAN 1060 with Sra. Young. In high school I took Spanish and did not enjoy it at all, however with Sra. Young I looked forward to going to class M/W/F with her. She was always very enthusiastic and happy to see her students, even though it was first thing in the morning and we had all just rolled out of bed. She has a passion for teaching and creates lesson plans that are effective in teaching the language. It is a lot of material but she makes sure to cover everything that will be on the test and provide a lot of practice for both grammar concepts and vocabulary. If you have a question she is very responsive to emails and will make time for you outside of the classroom. If I could take SPAN 2010 with Sra. Young I would do it in a heartbeat, so if you can take Spanish with her do it!
Sara Young is by far the best language teacher I've EVER had. 1060 is a little daunting since it's 4 credits and technically 2 semesters of info, but Sra. Young makes it so manageable. I've never had a more energetic teacher (in any subject) and she makes every class fly by. She really cares about each individual student's progress and is so clear about what to expect in terms of projects/tests/grades. She gives you every opportunity to get a decent grade and sincerely wants everyone to improve their Spanish skills! She's seriously such a delight to learn from, I only wish I could take 2010 and 2020 with her.
I highly recommend this class (and this professor) while at UVA. Professor Young is so fun and engaging. She creates an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and can participate. My class was 9-9:50 Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but it flew by SO fast. In this course, participation is a big factor, but Professor Young provides ample opportunities to participate. This course is a flipped classroom where students will teach themselves through chapter readings and Connect work outside of class, so they can participate and review in class. Spanish 1060 is accelerated. Students will cover 16 chapters of the textbook including vocabulary and grammar concepts. While this is a lot of work, there is a lot of room to succeed in the class. Professor Young's main goal is to see her students excel in a language she loves. She is very approachable in and out of class and very eager to answer questions. I had to take this course to fulfill a language requirement and I am so glad I had her as a professor.
If you need to take Spanish 1060 or want to take it for fun, you definitely need to take it with Professor Young. She is hands down one of the best professors I have had at UVA. I am in the nursing school and have a very heavy workload, so I was looking for a fun class to fulfill credits and this class was amazing! Part of what made it amazing was Professor Young. Spanish 1060 does have a heavy workload but if you manage your time wisely it is very doable. Professor Young makes herself available outside of class and responds very quickly to emails. She will answer any questions you have and is there to help you in any way possible! She also has a tutoring program every Monday that you can attend for extra help. She makes learning Spanish fun and easy. So if you decide to take Spanish 1060, I highly recommend you take it with Professor Young.
If you are taking 1060 you NEED to take it with Professor Young. She is hands down the best Spanish teacher I have ever had. I was not looking forward to taking Spanish and she made it my favorite class of the year. 1060 has a lot of work outside of class, but she made all of it much more attainable. She has a fun loving energy that made class fly by. She was always available for extra help outside of class and was continuously going around the classroom during class to make sure we all understood what was going on.
If you're looking to take Spanish 1060, definitely take it with Professor Young. Not only is she a great teacher, but she makes the class fun and enjoyable. 1060 is a heavy workload outside of the classroom, so manage your time well and do the assignments before they are due. Professor Young makes herself available and promptly responds to any emails or questions you might have! Spanish isn't my strong suit at all, but having her as a profesor made the semester more enjoyable and I was able to better understand the material. She makes everyone in her class feel comfortable to participate and teaches the material in a clear, understandable way. I highly recommend Professor Young!
Professor Young is very enthusiastic and constantly keeps her students up on their feet! The classes will feel fast paced but there is no choice but to speed through the lessons in order to cover everything and to provide enough time for practice activities. Professor Young is open for mistakes and initiates various activities which allows students to interact with one another. Be aware that since this is an accelerated Spanish course, the classes are utilized as a review time of the chapter you have read through outside of class, on your own time. As for work load, there is homework every day whether it is through Connect or e-Portfolio. The task is doable and will need to spend at least one hour. It is not difficult to do well in this course as long as you do not procrastinate and memorize your vocabularies. The professor is flexible in scheduling for office hours and would love to give any aid to her students.
This was a great class. Professor Young was my favorite professor this semester, she is kind, funny, approachable, and a great teacher! The class moves very quickly which can be challenging, but is certainly manageable and the workload is reasonable. Professor Young makes class interesting and fun by implementing lots of group/partner activities and incorporating lots of class participation. Class is always a fun environment where everyone feels encouraged to participate and practice their Spanish skills. By completing all of the online work and practicing new concepts diligently, it is feasible to earn a good grade in this class.
Professor Young has been one of my favorite professors during my time at UVA. She brings energy to class everyday and makes learning a new language less stressful and more enjoyable. Anyone can succeed in this class if they are willing to put the time and effort into it. There are a lot of online assignments every week, but they are very helpful in preparing you for group work in class. Professor Young cares about all of her students and wants them to succeed. She also makes time in class to explain all the directions for the online activities, to discuss the grade rubrics for projects, and also makes sure to answer any question a student may have. If you want an understanding, helpful, and smart professor for SPAN 1060, then I highly recommend taking her course.
The class is a lot of work in general because it is so fast paced, but it isn't too difficult to get a good grade if you complete all the work because there are so many grades throughout the semester. Professor Young is very on the ball and will make you work hard for your points, but she also makes things very clear, keeps time open for student questions and tutoring, and is a super nice person to talk to in general. Definitely worth taking the class with her so that you actually know the material well enough for the higher-level Spanish classes.
This class was definitely a lot of work, however Professor Young was a wonderful teacher! She kept us engaged in class and went over all possible concepts in class. She genuinely cares about all of her students and will help you whenever you may need it. The course is a lot to take in at first but as long as you keep up with all of your assignments you will be surprised how much you will learn. Very worthwhile class despite all of the work.
I took my first Spanish class with Professor Young at UVA and she really set the bar high. The last time I had taken a spanish class in high school was my sophomore year so this class was a little challenging at first. But I most definitely enjoyed myself. Professor Young is a very interactive professor so be ready to learn the names of your peers and be ready to answer a few questions. 11/10 would recommend spanish with Sara Young!
Professor Young truly cares about each of her students and challenges students to do their best. Professor Young wants to know what works best for her students and will use student suggestions to make the classroom a fun learning environment. If you need extra help, she will go out of her way to help you find ways to strengthen your Spanish skills. Wonderful professor!
Sara Young is the most amazing professor that you will come across at UVA. She is the epitome of energetic teaching. Professor Young brought enthusiasm and encouragement to each class without fail. My heart breaks leaving her class; beyond the great atmosphere, Sara Young gave me a great understanding of the basics of Spanish. I look forward to future Spanish classes because Professor Young has prepared me well to venture ahead.
This has by far been my most pleasant and rewarding class taken at UVA so far. If you put in the work you will most certainly do well. I was really scared of the course at first, but after a few weeks once I got into the routine of things I began to really enjoy this course - not to mention having a terrific professor like Professor Young helped me extraordinarily. I remember reading a review before the semester started that she really cared about her students, and after just a few weeks of having her as a professor I could completely see why. Not only is she so kind and understanding, but she is a very efficient teacher who knows her Spanish very very well, makes class engaging and comfortable (which helps for shy students), and goes out of her way to make sure her students are improving and understanding the concepts. Not to mention she will respond to an email as quickly as sending a text message. One of the things that stood out most to me was that she always rewarded and acknowledged students for good work - it means a lot in a large University to have a professor who goes out of her way to acknowledge progress and hard work to make learning more personal and motivating. So in other words, take the class with Professor Young, work hard, and it is very possible to do well!
TAKE PROFESSOR YOUNG. She is the best Spanish teacher out there! I hated Spanish before college and dreaded taking it but Prof Young make the class super engaging and a comfortable environment to practice speaking and ask questions.
First off, every Spanish class has the exact same homework, assignments, exams, etc. due to Spanish department policy so no SPAN 1060 class is going to have less work than any of the others. Since this is a 4 credit beginner language course, there is about 4-6 hours of online homework per week, but it isn't difficult and really helps you learn the concepts. There is so much buffer with assignments in this class that the final is only worth 10% of your grade and it is incredibly feasible to get an A albeit it being a 95.5 per Spanish department policy.
PROFESSOR YOUNG is fantastic. She is always willing to help you, especially if you attend office hours, and will even go out of her way to schedule a separate time that works for you in the case you can't make it to the prescheduled times. I HIGHLY recommend going to her office hours if not for help but just to get to know her because she rocks :-). However, in the case you do need help I would DEFINITELY go because she goes over all the information you need to know for exams in a way you can understand better than learning it on your own.
Professor Young makes the class really enjoyable. She was always very enthusiastic and wanted each student to succeed. She was also available and very helpful outside of class. I definitely recommend going to her office hours because she will make it worth while. The workload is a lot but doable and all the assignment were also helpful and necessary to learn the material. It covers a lot of material as it is two classes combined but you will learn a lot. She also grades very quickly and gives good feedback. I highly recommend Professor Young for 1060 as she makes the class.
Definitely take this class with Professor Young! Professor Young is the best professor I have ever had at UVa. She is so helpful and really wants her students to succeed. Spanish 1060 is a lot of work but it is not that bad if you do your work on time! She explains everything so well and is always there to help students understand the concepts. She always makes herself available outside of class to meet with students and returns grades extremely fast. If you need to take Spanish or are interested in it, 100% take it with her. :)
If you love Spanish, take this course with Profesora Young!! She cares about her students a lot and will work to help you as much as possible. She will make sure you are prepared for the tests and she grades everything at the speed of light. This class, regardless of the teacher, is not easy. There is a lot of homework and the tests cover a lot of material. This is typical of an accelerated course and is out of the professor's control. However, Profesora Young makes the class the best it can be because she is so well-prepared and caring. You will only succeed in this class if you put in as much work as Profesora, though. Just because she is a good teacher does not mean you can coast. Take Prof. Young and buena suerte :)
This is a class that combines SPAN 1010 and SPAN 1020 in one semester, so it is accelerated and has more work than normal semesters. However, Professor Young makes it so enjoyable. She is so enthusiastic and patient with her students. I thoroughly enjoyed going to class every day and she made me love Spanish again. She genuinely wants her students to succeed and is so willing to help. If you want to be successful in Spanish, definitely take it with Professor Young!!
TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROF. YOUNG!!!! She is the best and really wants her students to succeed and learn the language. The class has a hefty workload but that is expected as a four credit course. The way the class is scheduled really organizes the busy work and makes it so easy. GO to her office hours and she is more than willing to help you from the very start. I would not recommend anyone else for this course.
SPAN 1060 was not bad at all. However, there was a lot of homework, but they were very easy assignments. I learned so much in this class. I know that leaning a new language such as Spanish is difficult and very challenging, and sometimes very intimidating, but Prof. Young is the best. She makes the class fun and enjoyable that learning Spanish was not bad at all. There was a lot of concepts to learn and understand for this class, but if you put in the effort to do all the homework on time, study for all the exams, and participate every class then you should be just fine. She explains everything so well and she will help you understand if any concepts are confusing. She is such a great person, she is always very helpful in class and during office hours. She cares so much about her students and she is usually available whenever you need her through email/office hours. She's awesome and I loved her class. I very highly recommend her.
There is a lot of homework for this class and it can get pretty tedious but it's really not that difficult, just long. Professor Young is awesome and makes class go by quickly! She is very organized and helps you stay on top of your assignments, which there are a lot of! It's not too hard to get an A, especially if you study continuously throughout the semester, but that isn't necessary.
Spanish in general is not fun due to excessive homework and onerous assignments. Prof. Young makes it so much better. She is really nice, cares about all of her students, and isn't the hardest grader. She often will give away tips about the exams, and is an amazingly fast grader. Everyone in my class liked her, and I wish I could have her for the next level. I learned so much from her class! Highly, highly recommend her.
