I came into the class with only some Spanish from 10th grade and ended up doing very well. If you have never taken Spanish before, this course is definitely doable, but it is going to take a lot of time. Professor Young is one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Anything you are confused about, she will explain in detail until you are comfortable with the concept. The exams weren't bad, and the other projects/small assignments really help your grade as well! Definitely recommend taking this course with Young!!
Professor Young is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. She is very understanding and she takes pride in teaching the material. We would go through the material very fast, but she would always be available to excellently explain a concept. If you are having trouble with a concept, she always takes the time to explain it and nail the concept until you have it down. She also explains all of the assignments in detail and how everything is graded.
I loved Professor Young! She was so engaging and had lots of energy. She very obviously cared about her students and really wanted each of us to fully understand the content. She took care to make sure we all were engaged. I am not good at Spanish and was nervous for the class. Professor Young made this very manageable and was so understanding. Though the department makes this class adhere to a strict syllabus, she does as much as she can to help her students. She is generous with her time and very sharp as well. Highly recommend Professor Young.
This course was perfect for me. Professor Young is very enthusiastic about teaching Spanish and puts a lot of effort into making the class both fun and informative. At the beginning, there is a lot of homework, but it starts to level out as the semester goes along. The course goes over the topics in a very easy to understand manner. This course peaked my interest in Spanish because of the way it was both taught and organized.
Professor Young is, hands down, the best professor! If I could have given her six stars, I would! She is extremely knowledgeable and an exceptionally great teacher as well!
The class itself is a lot of work but it is 4 credits so that is to be expected (but that is true for all SPAN 1060 classes - same amount of work for each of them regardless of the professor). As far as grading goes, Professor Young is very fair and an extremely fast grader! It is honestly truly amazing how fast she can grade. If you take this class with her, you will never worry about where your grade stands as it is constantly updated.
Moreover, Professor Young does a great job of giving her students all the resources that they need to succeed. For example, she has a tutoring program that, this semester, was held every week on Mondays. This is an extremely useful and well-designed program that offers support to students. I went to this program almost every week and had a great experience every single time.
You need at least a 95.50% to get an A in this class (again, not Professor Young's policy but the Spanish department's). While this is a high benchmark to achieve, it is not impossible to do. In fact, asking good, relevant questions and staying on top of the work are fundamental necessities to achieve an A in the class.
As mentioned before, taking this course with Professor Young may be the best decision you make for next semester - great class with an even better professor!
Profesora Young was by far the best Spanish professor I've ever had. Spanish has always been the subject that simply doesn't click for me. I took it for several years across middle and high school and just never saw myself enjoying/excelling in it. Profesora Young changed that! She was always available to provide extra help, routinely sent follow-up emails after class to clear up concepts that I individually struggled with, and, best of all, had crazy short turnaround times with assignments. I would take every Spanish class with Profesora Young if I could! Can't recommend her enough.
One of the best instructors I have had at this University. She works hard to know each of her students further than just surface level. There is a lot of work in this course, but Professor Young does her best to make it manageable for her students. I was taking 18 credits this semester and I had no trouble turning stuff in on time to her. Also, she grades very reasonably. Overall, she is a wonderful instructor and does a wonderful job teaching the actual course materials. I always felt prepared just by what we had done in class. She also gives any extra resources that you ask her for. Hands down, you need to take this class with Professor Young!
The professor is so understanding and nice. The class seems daunting at first, and there is a lot of work no doubt, but Profesora Young makes sure you have the best time. She is very approachable and doesn't lie to you as a student. She is very goofy and enthusiastic about teaching Spanish. As long as you keep up with the due dates you will be fine. I didn't do any studying outside of doing the assigned homeworks and I ended up with a solid A. You can tell Profesora Young cares about each one of her students, and really makes sure that the class feels like a community. I entered the class knowing no one and now I have some of my closest friends thanks to her.
This review is based on the professor, not the class-- my ratings would be wayyyy lower if I was talking about the class and not the instructor b/c the class itself is just a ton of busy work. Professor Young was an awesome professor!! She prepared very engaging classes and graded every assignment the day we turned it in-- even the final! The class itself is standardized and the workload is annoying, but having a professor that cared made it much more enjoyable. If I could, I would take every Spanish class here with her. If you have the chance, def enroll with Professor Young.
Professor Young was one of the best professors I’ve ever had! She always gave great feedback and was available to help outside of class whenever I needed! The workload of Span 1060 is heavy because it’s 4 credits but it’s definitely manageable. They give you 3 tokens to use if you miss assignments and deadlines which is so helpful. As long as you do the assignments, it’s pretty easy to get an A. There are 4 exams total and they count the same as the projects which are super easy. The classroom practice is what helps the most with learning, Professor Young is great at explaining all of the concepts. There is also free Spanish tutoring available for students which is helpful!
