Professor Given is one of the most genuinely nice people ever. He was extraordinarily kind and understanding with students about life happening- especially during the Coronavirus. He is so passionate about early Christianity and religious studies that it is infectious. The class could get dry during lecture, but he was so passionate that it really helped. No tests or quizzes, just a few short papers throughout the semester. He really wants to help you as much as he can and I hope he is able to teach more at UVA (this was his first year!)
Yes, Professor Given is incredibly nice and an enthusiastic teacher, but the class itself was pretty disappointing. There was very little structure and every concept was a "we'll come back to this later" and then glossed over. Readings were crazy long and after about the first month, I stopped doing them altogether. If you skip the readings, you'll still be able to do well on the writing assignments but you won't be able to talk much during your discussion. I took this class during the coronavirus pandemic so our final exam got changed so I can't speak to how skipping the readings would affect that. All in all, VERY boring but easy A class. Also, my TA didn't keep a gradebook on Collab so you won't really know you grade until the end unless you figure it out yourself.
