Barry is a very knowledgeable professor and is very good at answering questions. He’s also one of the nicest professors I met and genuinely wants us to succeed . However, he goes WAYYY too fast during lecture. No one was able to keep up during lecture because he would speed run through the lectures. It was to the point in which we ran out of material in the middle of the semester and he started making new modules which were never covered on exams or the project. That being said, you don’t need to understand what he is saying during lecture to do the exams and project. So feel free to skip lecture unless he goes over the project. You have zyBook assignments that are due every two weeks which will cover the bulk of what you need to know for the class. The exams are take-home with no time limit and are based on the zyBook assignments. For the project, I would recommend starting early and getting TA help because some of these assignments are difficult without guidance. However, there are times in which the prof will literally show the solution to project to the class during lecture so you can just copy that. He is also very forgiving when it comes to extensions( he gave an extension to maybe 1/4 or more of the class for Project 5) and very responsive on Piazza. Most people come out of this class not learning much because of the structure of the class and the fact that Barry goes to fast, which is unfortunate because this class is fundamental for future ECE classes. Overall, it shouldn’t be hard at all to do well in the course as long as you put in some effort.
This class was pretty low effort and quite enjoyable with Prof Johnson. He was very accommodating and understanding of people's situations and the whole online teaching thing in general. He was always willing to push back due dates and work with the students to ensure they weren't being too overworked. The prerecorded lectures were basically a repeat of the material covered in zy book (online textbook/hw platform), so you could forgo the lectures and just do the homework and you'd be fine. Overall, this semester with Prof Johnson was pleasant and quite easy. #tCF2020
I took this class for my major online and overall it really wasn't that bad. I believe the in-person version of this course was likely harder and I also heard that the instructor who taught the class before Professor Barry was also different - for example instead of writing reports, you would just design circuits.
As I took it, the class consisted of:
Reading the textbook and completing problems online within it graded by completion (easy 100% if you put some time in)
4 midterms worth 10% each - administered via collab and given a whole week without time limits. I felt this to be very fair and encouraged understanding the material
Lab reports - there were supposed to be 6 this semester but we ended up only having 3 for a total of 15%. For each report you must design a circuit and then detail the process with a summary etc. Definitely look over your reports with the TAs (very easy when office hours are over discord)
Final worth 15% - same as midterms but decently longer
Overall, it was an interesting class and I thought the material was useful background information for electrical engineering / computer science. Professor Barry seemed like a nice guy, all lectures were uploaded online but he was very responsive to any questions on Piazza. I would not be scared to take this course and would say it was less stressful than a math class. Just start on lab reports early.
