This is an intro to Science of Information course. They kind of slap "iPhone" on it so more people will take it. That said, the course does relate some of the topics to the iPhone. Being an intro course, it covers many of the fundamental concepts to the science of information: digital v. analog, frequency domain, info theory, error detection, hardware, etc. Farzad is a pretty good instructor. He's super knowledgeable and pretty passionate about what he teaches. When I took the course, he was a relatively new professor, so he was still working things out and refining his teaching. There were times where he kind of assumed we knew certain concepts when we did not. He also does not teach everything for exams, for example he may not explicitly go over all the different question types that may be on the exam. Overall he's a pretty good professor. Most of the negative comments are probably students who probably thought the course was all about the iPhone and were disappointed when it wasn't.......anyways. GO TO TA OFFICE HOURS FOR THE HOMEWORKS. This will greatly reduce the amount of time you spend on homework. Obviously, you should attempt all of the problems before you go, but definitely go to TA office hour for help do the homework. The labs are usually straight forward, there's usually a document that walks you through some work in matlab to help you better learn concepts from class. It's mostly participation. Go to the TA review session before exams, if they have them. They are super helpful.
Tl;dr course is a science of information plus an occasional reference to the iPhone. Farzad is a good professor but he's still learning to teach. Go to TA office hours for homework.
this class sucks. save yourself. That's the best advice I can give you. avoid this class at ALL COSTS IT SUCKS SO BAD. This isn't meant to hate on Farzad, he isn't a bad professor (even though apparently it's much better with Acton, cannot speak too much on that) it's really just the class itself honestly just save yourself and get away. If you don't have to take this, just do not do it. I have never in my life regretted taking a class as much as this one.
