Took this course because of the science elective requirement through the e-school. I thought this class was more challenging than I expected. Homeworks were difficult, but going to TA hours made them easy because TAs were really helpful. One homework assignment a week, probably spent an hour and half at TA hours to start and finish it.
Exams would be really hard if not for Acton's review sessions the lecture before the exam. So if you do not go to the review sessions, you probably won't do as well as those who did. Also, attendance wasn't required by him and he put the slides up online. Slides were pretty helpful, but his lectures going along with the slides was the best way to learn the material.
Overall, this class was worthwhile, Acton was incredibly funny and very welcoming. Not to mention that he was also very knowledgeable in ECE.
The professor is a pretty down to earth guy and is really chill. However, the lectures don't help with the homework too much so you really should go to office hours to get it done. Acton reviews test questions right before the exam, and some almost always appear again on the exam. Overall, pretty okay class with a generous curve on tests.
Scott is awesome! This is a really great class and one of the most interesting e-school classes I've taken so far. Acton's lectures can sometimes be dry but he is super funny and chill. Just go to the lecture before the test and he basically gives you half the answers. The final is also easy but he gives you the option of not taking it if want to use your test average as your final instead. The material is so interesting and has tons of applications which he talks about in class, so I highly recommend taking it as your science elective or even just for fun. His grading system is really weird though - he adds a vague "spin" on everything, where he sort of looks at each individual grade relative to the average to pick who gets an A and who gets a B (above average means A, below means B, not many A-/B+ grades). It makes it impossible to estimate your grade if you are not clearly in the A or B categories, and it's kind of a toss up at the end if you are borderline, which is a majority of students in the class.
The homeworks, on the other hand, were the spawn of Satan. As much as I liked Scott, I've got to say he really made the homeworks impossible to do without going to office hours - even then, some took forever. Some of the TA's were really helpful whereas others were a-holes and were always unprepared, so it was a matter of going to the right TA's office hours. Also, sometimes each TA gave a different answer so there was basically no coordination and the homeworks were always such a frustrating experience. Furthermore, problem sessions were completely useless so I hope he improves these two things in the future.
TLDR: 10/10 would recommend, interesting material and great prof, homeworks suck, but tests aren't too hard and there is a generous-ish curve.
Professor Acton is so great. He's really funny, he constantly cracks jokes, super deadpan. He's really nice, and a pretty good lecturer, though he takes some getting used to (I didn't follow him at all the first couple of days). The material is usually pretty interesting. Homeworks are terrible, though. They can be pretty hard to begin with, but the reason they were so bad my semester was that they were ahead of the lectures, so we had to do them before we learned the material. If this happens to you, find some nice TA's and go to their office hours. If they are like the TA's I had, they will get you through it. Labs weren't very hard, but I'd recommend starting early because the TA has to check everyone off one by one, and it can be a pretty long wait towards the end of class. So if you want to get out of there at a reasonable time, go early. Tests weren't that bad, just make sure to go to the lecture before the test, because he goes over a lot of examples that are very similar to questions on the test. Overall, this class was very worthwhile, and it's not too hard to get an A. Homeworks can be pretty time consuming though.
Still not sure how I feel about this class. His lectures were long and kind of boring, but his sense of humor helped. He doesn't require anyone to go to class because "if you want to waste your money on education and not come, that's your choice." His homework takes a lot of time and frustration, so do it early enough that you have time to go to office hours for help. His tests were theoretically very easy. He lets us bring in cheat sheets and he has a review session before them where he basically spells out what to do. For some reason, I never did very well on those tests but in the end got a B.
There is also a weekly problem session. You get full credit on that part of your grade if you go to all of them and get your work checked off by the TA. However, there is one TA who has to check everybody's work when they are done, and with everybody finishing about the same time, there ends up being a HUGE wait. Either go early to get a head start or be prepared to stay late.
Really easy class and pretty interesting information (at least for me). The TA wasn't so good. She always left recitation early and just basically gave the answers to two students who would then teach the students who showed up for homework help. Tests are easy if you go to class and pay attention or just read the slides.
He's an incredibly enthusiastic lecturer and plays in jokes to hold your attention. Light homework workload, interesting material, cheat sheets on tests, and reasonably easy tests. No required attendance, no quizzes outside of three pre-scheduled exams (two midterms and a final). Really recommend taking this class with Acton, he's great.
Acton is an incredibly funny guy who makes the class interesting. Anyone who has an interest in technology of any kind should take this class. It teaches a variety of technology topics from communications, to probability, to the GPS system. It's got a little bit of everything so you'll find something you're interested in.
