Really interesting subject but not a great professor. She has a monotonous voice and stumbles over her words a lot. But she wrote the textbook so she knows what she's talking about. I've heard a lot of bad things about the other profs for this class, so I'm not really sure there's a good prof to choose. If you're interested in this subject, definitely take the class anyway and take the discussion section too. The tests are tricky so study hard!!
This class was very, very picky with arbitrary grading (the curve is very extreme and you can go from an A to a B- on exams by missing 4 of the aforementioned very picky questions). Know all the small details in the book and statistics from class, she's really particular since she wrote the book. The optional discussion was actually interesting--covers the more intriguing topics that Patterson introduces in lecture. Riana is a great TA!
Patterson made the discussion optional, which was nice. However, going to class isn't especially necessary, but you HAVE to read the book and memorize stupid details about it. Her tests are very specific and require a lot of preparation to get a good grade. I don't recommend taking this class unless you're a psych major.
The only thing you need to know in order to do well on her tests is that she loves to ask specific questions about specific experiments and researchers she talks about during lecture and in the book (she wrote the textbook). I didn't know this and bombed the first test. Once I figured it out though, I aced the last two tests. There are three, non-cumulative tests that each count as 1/3 of your overall grade. Not a terribly stimulating class, but worth it if you're interested in children or if you would like to be a parent one day. Lots of practical information that I can apply to real life.
On a positive note, the class was actually pretty interesting and isn't very hard at all. Just read the book and you should be able to get an A. On the other hand, the lectures (as people have said before) can get pretty boring as everything Dr. Patterson says is basically on the slides. Overall though, I learned quite a bit (mostly from her book) and I'd reccomend it if you are interested in the subject at all.
I went into the semester thinking this would be my favorite class; i couldn't have been more wrong. Lectures were boring at best. Discussion even worse, response papers due every week- impossible to do well on them. Watch out for the curve on the exams, not always favorable! I learned nothing and received my lowest grade of any of my classes.
You read the entire book by the end of the semester, but Prof. Patterson breaks up the readings pretty well so its not too much all at one time. Discussion section was pretty pointless but you have to go and it counts fo 25% of your grade. I'm pretty sure the TA's make up the tests which are pretty random at times. The last test, especially, was really poorly written-it included questions from footnotes in the book! But overall its not that difficult of a class but you have to do the readings, go to lecture, and watch the multimedia cd if you want to get an A.
Good, solid class- The tests are straightforward, the subject matter is interesting & applicable, and Patterson's lectures are a nice mixture of powerpoint and media. Pretty easy but not a gut - response papers due almost every week, a project, and a fair amount of reading (but what you'd expect from a 200 psych class).
This class is wonderful, especially if you like kids, and has great TA's. I would definitely recommend it for one of the 200-level groups required for the major. The section requires a weekly reaction paper, but they are only one page long and very easy! The reading isn't difficult and the tests aren't so bad either.
